Acclaim to Pull GameCube Support

Company will continue to back PS2 and Xbox.

In an interview with MCV UK, publisher Acclaim Entertainment's new CEO Rod Cousens said that the company would, going forward, not support Nintendo®'s GameCube console. He cited poor sales of Acclaim software on the system and a lack of profit returns as the primary reasons.

"Why should we develop games for formats that don't generate comparable returns?" Cousens asked. "We are still supporting PS2 and Xbox, but Nintendo®? No, not in the near future."

Acclaim still plans to release titles already in development for Nintendo®'s platform. That small list of software includes such titles as Urban Freestyle Soccer, Legends of Wrestling III, and XGRA.

MCV promises to reveal more about Acclaim's strategies early next month. Stay tuned.

Update: Acclaim Entertainment called IGNcube this afternoon to clarify that some of Mr. Cousen's words in the MCV interview were published out of context. Acclaim reiterated that it would still release the games currently in development for GCN and that it would evaluate whether or not to support the console in the future on a case-by-case basis.
