PS2 Launch: Ridge Racer V Peripherals

It's NeGcon vs. JogCon... fight!

Just as IGNPS2 reported prior to the PlayStation 2's launch, Ridge Racer V is fully compatible with several of the original PlayStation controllers, including Namco's own JogCon and NeGcon racing control pads. Sony had promised backward compatibility for the PS2 with original PS (licensed) peripherals. And, IGNPS2 has been able to confirm today that in Ridge Racer V's case, everything seems to work.

Firstly, Ridge Racer V works with both the Dual Shock 2 and Dual Shock controllers. The game performs fine with either; however the analog buttons on the Dual Shock 2 don't really seem to play an important role in the game. I'm sure that in future games for the PS2 the analog buttons will be used more prominently.

Second up is the standard digital-only PlayStation controller. Sure it does work without any hiccups on the PlayStation 2, but seriously, why would you want to use this? It sucks, in my opinion.

Next up is Namco's JogCon racing controller, which was released with R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. It's by Namco, so you'd expect it to work great with Ridge Racer V, right? Well guess what? It does. The JogCon controller works great with Ridge Racer V and is probably my second favorite controller to play the game.

Here's my favorite: the NeGcon. Anyone's who has used the NeGcon with the Ridge Racer or a WipEout game knows that it is the ultimate racing controller...at least for those two series. So, it didn't surprise me that it works great with Ridge Racer V. While it takes a little while to get used to, the NeGcon performs wonderfully with the game and is probably the best way to experience it. Here's a warning, though: The controller can be extremely HARD on your wrist tendons if you use it extensively for long periods of time. Use it at your own risk.
