Grimmfest says: Starting off as a droll, sharply observed study of desperate, hustling lowlife, this jaw-dropping pitch-black multiple character crime comedy is about as brutal and cynical as it gets. Very much an ensemble piece, in which the entire cast is first rate, particular kudos due, nevertheless, to Melvil Poupaud as the increasingly morally compromised garden variety scumbag protagonist, never losing audience sympathy, no matter how far he falls, and to the great Asia Argento who brings unexpected nuance to her role as an increasingly out of her depth neo-Nazi sex trafficker. Beautifully shot, tautly directed, breakneck-paced, and wildly unpredictable, with a script that is laugh-out-loud funny, emotionally gripping, and at times genuinely shocking, this is a masterclass in narrative plate-spinning, and sleight of hand, with the various twists and reveals landing with dazzling timing, continually pulling the rug out from under the characters and viewer alike. And in the end, it takes absolutely no prisoners.
