So, hass has both the lightswitch and the lighbulbs connected to it over zigbee but there's some limited functionality and also we don't want to be dependant on homeassistant's uptime. there's a way to do this! with zigbee bindings

creating a binding group and attaching it/binding it to the light switch via zigbee device > dotdotdot/overflow menu > manage zigbee device > bindings tab.

we've bound the levelcontrol bindings to the hub overhead lights group.
