West Highland Way app features

Everything West Highland Way Companion does, and exactly which bits depend on whether you carry an iPhone or an Android phone.

What the West Highland Way app does

Know where you are without a signal

iPhone & Android

The route is built into the app and your phone finds its position from satellites, not phone masts. You can see exactly where you are on the West Highland Way even with no signal at all.

Set a goal for each day

iPhone & Android

Tell the app where you are walking to each day — Drymen on day one, Rowardennan on day two — and it guides you there. You always know how far is left today, how the stage is going, and how far remains of the whole walk.

Elevation profiles

iPhone & Android

See the climbs and descents for the full walk and for each day — distance, ascent, descent and the high point — so you know which days will be the toughest before you set off. On iPhone, climbs are named and given a difficulty.

Find your way back to the route

iPhone & Android

Took a wrong turn, or staying somewhere off the trail? The app shows you the way back to the route line, so you can rejoin it where you left off or head straight to it in the morning.

Trail Passport

iPhone only

Collect animated stamps as you progress along the West Highland Way. Missed a checkpoint — a late start, a bus into the trail, a day the phone stayed in the pack — and you can still recover it.

What to pack

iPhone & Android

A ready-made packing list you can edit to suit your walk. Tick items off as they go into the rucksack so nothing gets left behind.

Keep a journal of your walk

iPhone & Android

Write up each day and add your own photographs as you go. When you are home, export the whole journal as a PDF to print or share.

Walk it in either direction

iPhone & Android

Heading north from Milngavie to Fort William, or south from Fort William to Milngavie? Switch direction and the guidance, distances and daily goals all follow the way you are actually walking.

Miles or kilometres

iPhone & Android

Show distances in miles or kilometres, and heights in metres or feet. Pick whichever you are used to.

Day and night mode

iPhone & Android

Switch between a light and a dark view for early starts, late finishes and bright days on the hill.

Map built into the app

Android only

The Android version includes the map itself, so the terrain around you draws whether or not you have a signal.

iPhone and Android: where they differ

Most of the features above work the same on both phones. A few things genuinely differ, and it is worth knowing which before you set off.

The map itself

iPhone

Drawn by Apple Maps, so terrain needs a signal

Android

Built into the app and always available

Trail Passport

iPhone

Animated stamps as you progress, with recovery for missed checkpoints

Android

Not available

Android has the map built in. On iPhone the terrain is drawn by Apple Maps, so it may not appear without a signal — but your position and the route line still show, which is all you need to walk yourself back on track.
