Webmineral's Chemical Compostion Database contains quantitative data on the chemical make-up of every mineral. This data is derived from the chemical or empirical formulae by back-calculation of published values.

The Search Engine reads reads the a database table containing mineral name, element, and percent.

  1. Element name is the chemical symbol for the element. Example: Au for gold, W for tunsten, Na for sodium. The weight percent is the mineral percent. Oxide percent's do not work. Here is a handy Excel file containing all the conversion factors for changing Oxide percent to weight percent and vice versa.
  2. The % tolerance number fuzzes the weight percent data up and down by the tolerance value. For example, if you choose "Ca" as the element, 22.2% as the weight percent, and 8% as the % tolerance, all values between 19.98% and 24.42% Calcium are selected.
  3. One, two or three elements can be selected to limit possible minerals in the your analyses. Please note: The same % tolerance number is applied to each element.
