Koenraad Jonckheere, Rubens’s questions religion, paragone, and the ontology of painting, Harvey Miller, Londres-Turnout, 2026, 320 p.
ARGUMENT : Rubens’ Questions: Religion, Paragone, and the Ontology of Painting explores the pivotal role of doubt in understanding the work of Peter Paul Rubens. Focusing on his easel paintings from the 1610s, this book argues that Rubens engaged with the era’s most pressing intellectual debates without resorting to overt dogma. His works served as open-ended invitations, encouraging viewers to grapple with complex issues of religion, art, and philosophy, offering no definitive answers but instead providing space for personal reflection and recalibration. In contrast to the more direct, polemical writings of his contemporaries, Rubens subtly used his compositional mastery to question the very nature of art—its visual and tactile properties—while navigating the tensions between idolatry and iconoclasm. Rather than aligning with one side of these heated debates, Rubens’ paintings proposed a nuanced middle ground, engaging with the ontological questions of his day and affirming the enduring value of painting itself. Additionally, this book addresses a significant gap in Rubens scholarship: the almost total absence of Dutch-language sources in the existing literature. By examining these overlooked materials, it reveals a paradigmatic shift in Rubens’ artistic approach, one that was deeply informed by the intellectual climate of the Netherlands.

Matthijs Jonker, Katherine Reinhart (éd), The Visual Culture of Scientific Societies in the Age of Baroque, Harvey Miller, Londres-Turnout, 2026, 386 p.
ARGUMENT : One of the most important developments in the history of science from the late 15th until the late 18th century was the foundation of institutions for collaborative research and the publication of knowledge, such as the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome (1603), the Academia Naturae Curiosorum (Leopoldina) in Schweinfurt (1652), the Accademia del Cimento in Florence (1657), the Royal Society in London (1660), the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris (1666), and the Scientific Academy of St Petersburg (1725). Within these institutions, knowledge was not only acquired and disseminated orally and textually, but also visually. From drawings, which circulated in society meetings to the printed plates in their published books, images across all media were vital to the developing practices of early modern science. This volume provides the first comprehensive and comparative understanding of the function of images and visual strategies within these burgeoning institutions. The contributions deal with the visualization a manifold of early modern scientific disciplines (from natural history to medicine, from mathematics to acoustics, and from ethnography to geology and geometry) in institutions in Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, Portugal, Russia, and the Netherlands, from the late 15th until the late 18th century. By combining a multidisciplinary perspective with a wide geographical point of view and a long temporal framework, the volume provides new insight into the critical role of visual practices within pre-modern scientific societies.

Bartolomé Yun-Castilla, Spanish Globalization through Murillo’s Eyes. Reflections from Seventeenth-century Seville, Londres, Bloomsbury, 2026, 312 p.
ARGUMENT : This open access book examines the work of the 17th-century Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) – a figure who barely left the city of Seville – as a way of understanding globalization, its consequences, and its limits. Full of saints, friars, virgins, and Christs, or poor people and cheerful pícaros oblivious to social injustice, Murillo’s painting has been considered representative of the Counter-Reformation and the exponent of an immobile, even introverted, society that regressed with the ‘crisis of the 17th century’. Spanish Globalization through Murillo’s Eyes introduces a global perspective by considering the Atlantic art market and developing comparisons with Protestant paintings and an analysis of Murillo’s iconography alongside the social and political theory of his time. Such comparisons and analyses illuminate a different image, emphasizing the idea of a common European path towards modernity, individualism, emotional self-control and social change. The book also examines how Murillo’s contemporaries interpreted his iconography. The result is a new and sharper understanding of the tensions created by globalization in the field of art, in the construction of imagined communities, and in social relations in the early modern era.

Cecilia Paolini, Il Giardino delle Idee. I Cesi, Rubens e l’Antico a Roma, Rome, Viella, 2026, 210p.

Giuliano Colicino, Lorenzo Lorizzo, Napoli sotto torchio.

Patrizia Tosini, Chiara Violin (dir.), Palazzo Ruggieri.

Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò, Omaggio a Carlo Maratti, Rome, Gangemi, 2026,120 p.

R. R. Massimi, V. Viviana (dir.), Angeli messaggeri, custodi e viandanti.

M. Mazzetti (éd.), The Body in Musical Performance. Knowledge, Gesture, and Identity, Turnhout, Brepols, 2026, 276 p.
ARGUMENT : This volume offers a groundbreaking exploration of musical embodiment across time, geography, and genre, bringing together thirteen essays that reframe the performing body as a site of knowledge, creation, and critical reception. From early modern opera to nineteenth-century improvisation, from experimental multimedia theatre to contemporary performance analysis, the contributors reveal how gesture, physical technique, proprioception, and symbolic constructions of the body shape, and are shaped by, musical meaning. Uniting historically grounded inquiry with performance theory and cognitive approaches, the essays cluster around four main axes: the embodiment of musical meaning in the interaction between performer and listener; the body as cultural and ideological construct in gendered, stigmatised, and national identities; the transmission and reactivation of embodied knowledge in historical performance; and the creative body as agent in composition, pedagogy, and ritual. Drawing on sources as diverse as early wax-cylinder recordings, liturgical chant, zarzuela reviews, and postwar ballet-opera hybrids, the volume foregrounds embodiment as both material and epistemic. Rather than treating the body as an expressive vehicle alone, these essays demonstrate that musical works themselves — whether composed, improvised, or remembered — are shaped through the performer’s somatic intelligence and the listener’s imaginative co-presence. With contributions from leading scholars and practitioner-researchers, this collection sets a new standard for interdisciplinary studies of musical performance. It will be essential reading for musicologists, performers, theorists, and historians of the body seeking to understand how music happens in and through the body, across eras and expressive systems.

Leila Zammar, Opera, Scenography, and Social Standing, The Barberini Court in Rome 1628–1656, Turnhout, Brepols, 2026, 321 p.
ARGUMENT : This monograph concerns the development of scenography and its use as a subtle political tool in festival entertainments at the court of the Barberini during the seventeenth century in Rome. It covers the period 1628–1656, filling a gap in the study of the staging of performances in Rome during that period, and investigates how members of the Barberini family played a key role in the development of staging techniques and theatrical devices, to advance and consolidate their power. A wide range of primary sources, including reports, avvisi, letters, engravings, and contemporary manuals of scenography and theatrical sketches are analysed. A selection of these documents is transcribed and made available for the first time in the Appendix. The book includes computer-aided reconstructions of stage plans for several of the spectacles investigated; these provide a methodological tool for clarifying the hypotheses proposed, through the graphic representation of the scenographic elements of the performances analysed.

Ruth Bernard Yeazell, Vermeer’s Afterlives, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2026, 320 p.
ARGUMENT : Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) is one of the most beloved painters in the world. But when an enterprising French journalist and art critic set out to recover his work in the mid-nineteenth century, both his name and achievement were virtually forgotten. Vermeer’s Afterlives tells the remarkable story of how one of the great masters of the Dutch Golden Age was lost to obscurity until the rise of art history as a new discipline introduced his work to modern audiences and asks why his art compels so many other artists to respond with works of their own.
Ruth Bernard Yeazell traces the cultural ascendency of this extraordinary painter, whose enigmatic subjects and quiet, introspective interiors, transfigured by light and color, continue to captivate viewers far removed from his native Delft. We meet the critics who first welcomed Vermeer into the canon along with the painters who sought to imitate him, the forgers who tried to pass off their work as his own, and the contemporary artists who openly repurpose it. The enquiry concludes by looking at Vermeer’s paintings through the eyes of the poets and novelists who have attempted to translate his silence into words and give voice to the stories he left untold. Along the way, Yeazell interrogates the changing assumptions that govern art history, while demonstrating how paintings live on not only in later paintings but in poetry, fiction, photography, and film. Marking the 350th anniversary of Vermeer’s death, this beautifully illustrated book explores the variety of ways in which Vermeer’s art has been interpreted through the centuries and shows how his paintings take on afterlives of their own in the imaginations of those who view them.

C. Murray, S. Pitman, T.H. Uchacz (dir.), Maker Space Creative Environments in Early Modern Europe, New York, Bard Graduate Center, 2026, 400 p.
ARGUMENT : This volume charts alternative courses through history via the physical conditions and artisanal ecologies in which cultural artifacts were created in Europe from roughly 1400 to 1700. Maker Space: Creative Environments in Early Modern Europe asks how spatial considerations initiated, supported, and thwarted creative activities and highlights points of intersection and overlap across practices that we otherwise tend to think of as separate. Scholars have long had an interest in, for instance, the workshop, laboratory, studiolo, or Kunstkammer as distinct places of production—named coordinates that situate social and technical actions in a defined context.
The essays in this volume use the less fixed notion of space to break open such typologies, emphasizing the fluid, improvisational, and idiosyncratic aspects of creative work. They demonstrate how the ever-shifting array of tools, materials, environmental conditions, and bodies involved in artisanal production redirects our attention to the shared conditions that unite various enterprises of intellection, imagination, experimentation, and making. The book comprises a series of short case studies and extended meditations on particular sites where the work of the mind and hand coincided, from mines, arsenals, theaters, and imagined hermitages to tailors’ shops, artists’ workshops, the home, and even the space of a chemist’s notebook. This format of short and long essays animates the story of early modern making and thinking practices at various scales

Katlijne Van der Stighelen, Michaelina Wautier, Londres, Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd, 2026, 152 p.
ARGUMENT : Active in Brussels in the middle of the 17th century, Michaelina Wautier is now regarded as one of the foremost female artists of her time, although for many years her work was misattributed to her male contemporaries. Continually pushing boundaries as a female artist, Wautier exhibited an in-depth knowledge of classical mythology and was one of the first female painters to depict the male nude. Her body of work includes huge altarpieces, charming genre scenes and extraordinary flower garlands, as well as portraits and history paintings. In this book, the first illustrated monograph on the artist, leading Wautier expert Katlijne Van der Stighelen highlights Wautier’s originality and the complexity of her oeuvre. Considering how Wautier navigated restricting gender norms to stake out a productive career as a painter, the author places her work in the context of other European artists, both female and male. Incorporating recently discovered biographical information, this volume offers a comprehensive and in-depth overview of Michaelina Wautier’s life and work.

Margriet van Eikema Hommes, Gerard de Lairesse and his Painted Heavens. Iconography, Style and Technique in the Art of Ceiling Painting, Amsterdam, Amsterdam Uiversity Press, 2026, 384 p.
ARGUMENT : In 1672, when the Dutch Republic was under simultaneous attack by four foreign armies, Gerard de Lairesse created a magnificent three-part ceiling painting for one of the main protagonists of this Disaster Year—the powerful former burgomaster of Amsterdam, Andries de Graeff. Technical examination has revealed that Lairesse repeatedly altered his composition and in no fewer than four successive stages, he changed, removed or added figures and objects. In this book, Margriet van Eikema Hommes, in search of an explanation for this ceiling painting’s intriguing origins, investigates its meaning and purpose. The painter and his patron prove to have been jointly responsible for the iconography, which they repeatedly updated to reflect military and political events in the Disaster Year and the dramatic twists of fate in De Graeff’s own life. This beautifully illustrated book not only situates the work within its cultural and historical context but also offers an in-depth examination of Lairesse’s painting technique and the way he meticulously designed his ceiling pieces in close dialogue with the architecture of the room.

John Peacock, Van Dyck’s Genoese Nobles. Two Portraits in Context, Leyde, Brill, 2026
ARGUMENT : The aristocratic portraits painted by Van Dyck in the Republic of Genoa during the 1620s have become famous as definitively charismatic images of a ruling elite, the Genoese nobility being constitutionally defined as the governing class of the state. From the earliest written accounts of them a generic, collective appeal has been ascribed to these prepotently glamorous images, glossing over the specific meanings which any individual image might express. This study of two principal portraits uses their contrasting significances to expound the tension between established and shifting ideas of nobility which informed the thinking and behaviour of the Genoese patriciate, and of which Van Dyck shows perceptive awareness.

Steff Nellis, Stijn Bussels, Bram Van Oostveld (dir.), Performing Religion in the Early Enlightenment Theatricality and Performativity in Bernard and Picart’s Religious Ceremonies of the World, Leyde, Brill, 2026
ARGUMENT : This collection of essays explores how early modern authors, artists, and thinkers engaged with religious practices across cultures through ceremonial performance and visual representation. Using Bernard and Picart’s monumental Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (1723–1737) as its focal point, the chapters examine how rituals were observed, described, and imagined as vital expressions of belief and identity. Drawing on art history, religious studies, and performance studies, contributors reveal how these depictions both reflected cultural difference and anticipated later anthropological inquiry. The volume situates these insights within broader historical and intellectual contexts, highlighting performance and proto-anthropology as central to understanding religion in the early modern world.

Marieke J.E. van den Doel, Maria Fiametta Lovine, Visual Humanist Collaborations between Artists and Humanists (1450-1650), Leyde, Brill, 2026
ARGUMENT : Renaissance artists and humanists worked closely together on artistic projects that promoted the revival of antiquity and restored the pagan gods to their former glory. Artists often took on the role of ‘visual humanist’ themselves. This book examines the role of artists in various collaborations and addresses the question: was the revival of the pagan gods an artistic game or a religious practice? It thus provides new insights into a much-researched debate.

Graham R. Lea, Silent Eloquence: the rhetorical pictures of biblical history by Hendrick Goltzius and Pieter Lastman, Leyde, Brill, 2026
ARGUMENT : Focusing on how Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617) and Pieter Lastman (1583–1633) assimilated local rhetorical dramaturgy and performance practices found in the work of local rhetoricians (rederijkers), this book examines four examples of biblical history visualized in paintings by Goltzius and/or Lastman and analyses these paintings in comparison to stage texts written for the local chambers of rhetoric and which dramatize the same biblical narratives. Lea argues that Goltzius and Lastman each displayed their powers of poetic invention (poeterije) and their interest in advancing affective moral arguments by staging their history paintings in the manner that the rhetoricians staged their plays.

Jonathan E. Greenwood, Sainthood in the Early Modern Hispanic World, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2026
ARGUMENT : The sixteenth century witnessed the expansion of Spain’s empire on a global scale, as the Americas and portions of Asia fell within its dominions. Catholicism played a critical role in the Spanish colonization campaign, with the cult of saints at the centre of an expansionist agenda. In this book, Jonathan E. Greenwood offers an interdisciplinary examination of the recognition and veneration of sainthood through the case study of the canonization of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. Integral to this phenomenon were the miracles and devotional objects that navigated through the official canonization process conducted in Europe, which was overseen by the church hierarchy, and its oftentimes unsanctioned counterparts. Greenwood demonstrates how non- European cultic devotions to Ignatius were made manifest through images, relics, and reports of intercessions. Although the pope’s role in the naming of a saint was paramount, the uninhibited practices of colonial subjects proved to be equally important and worthy of consideration, culminating in the canonization of Ignatius.

Comment solfiait-on?

Stefano Pierguidi, Bellori critico d’arte, Rome, Campisano, 2025, 608 p.

N. Barbolani di Montauto, M. Ruffini, L. Sterpetti (dir.), The Medici beyond Florence. Art and Politics 1530-1648, Rome, Campisano, 2025, 384 p.
ARGUMENT : This book reconsiders the history and culture of the Medici family of Florence between the beginning of the ducal era (1530) and the end of the Thirty Years’ War (1648), examining art collecting and patronage within a broad geographical, political, and cultural framework through unpublished case studies and innovative methodologies. The book investigates the family’s lines of expansion toward Rome, the Viceroyalty of Naples, and Milan, and its relations with the European powers: Spain (through the figure of Eleanor of Toledo), France (focussing on the artistic patronage of Maria de’ Medici) and the Habsburg Empire (in light of the lively artistic exchanges with the court of Rudolph II). It also shows the relevance of the Medici presence in non-European areas such as the principality of Transylvania, the Levant, and the Americas, through cultural and commercial exchanges with the Mughal Empire and Brazil. The aim is to refocus attention on the interaction between members and close associates of the family and their adversaries, and reread Medici historiography from its formation to the present day. Focusing on objects, collections, and artistic mobility around the Medici, the book delves into the relationship between art and power and the importance of the circulation of symbols in the ongoing process of identity reconfiguration of the early modern world.

Rebecca Zorach, Spontaneous Objects. A Natural History of Art and Its Others, Penn State University Press, 2026, 292 p.
ARGUMENT : In the late medieval and early modern periods, European artists, theorists, and natural philosophers imagined Nature not simply as a force of reproduction but as an artist in its own right—a creative power capable of generating images, artifacts, and objects of beauty. Tracing this idea from the fifteenth through early nineteenth centuries, Rebecca Zorach challenges assumptions about human artistic genius and intention that have long dominated histories of art and science. With inspiration from new materialist theory, Zorach reclaims a largely disregarded undercurrent of historical thought about the powers of nature. Through case studies ranging from Renaissance centaurs and snails to Adam Smith’s beaver hat and Kant’s travelers’ tales, Zorach investigates how ideas about nature’s generative power unsettled conventional definitions of image, artifact, and artistic intention. At the same time, Zorach also confronts the violent legacies of a different vision of nature’s power: as European empires expanded, emerging natural philosophies contributed to global colonial imaginaries and racial hierarchies, reframing nature as a force to be classified, controlled, and exploited. In seeking to understand whether and how these views of nature cohere, Zorach excavates how the historical formation of the “human” and the “natural” depends on ideas about artistic production and artistic intention. A significant contribution to art history, visual culture, and environmental humanities, Spontaneous Objects will engage scholars interested in the intersections of art, science, theology, and colonial modernity.

Grace M. Harpster, Carlo Borromeo and the Sacred Image in Sixteenth-Century Italy. A Reformer’s Itinerary, Cambridge University Press, 2026, 300 p.
ARGUMENT : Scholars have long acknowledged that reforms after the Catholic Council of Trent (1545–63) represent a watershed in art history, yet they have failed to agree on whether, and how, they had any effect on art. In this study, Grace Harpster offers new insights on the impact of Catholic reform on early modern art. Exploring the social roles of images in late sixteenth-century Italy, she demonstrates that the pressures of Catholic reform increased, rather than limited, the authority of the image. Harpster approaches the topic through a focus on the zealous, peripatetic reformer Carlo Borromeo (1538–84), who implemented new ways to police and pray to sacred images after Trent. His actions demonstrate that Catholic reformers endorsed the image as a powerful object, truthteller, and miracle-worker. The diverse corpus of images on his itinerary, moreover, reveals the critical role of the sacred image in a formative religious and art historical moment.

Robert Brennan, Fabian Jonietz, Romana Sammern (éd.), Visual arts and medicine in early modern Europe and beyond. A collection of essays and sources, Manchester University Press, 2026, 328 p.
ARGUMENT : This book opens up new perspectives on the relationship between art, medicine, and science in late-medieval and early modern Europe. Looking beyond the traditional nexus of art, anatomy, and optics, the volume sheds light on a broader array of connections between artists and physicians: collaborations between painters and doctors on colour charts, handwork skills common to sculptors and surgeons, the transmission of art theory through medical texts long before the emergence of art writing itself as an independent genre, and the kinship of medical diagnosis with early modes of connoisseurship. Reconfiguring the histories of art, medicine, and science, the book also traverses conventional boundaries between physical and mental health, religious and medical modes of healing, menial and exalted forms of knowledge and labour, as well as vernacular and scientific understandings of human difference, including gender, race, and neurodiversity.

Tod A. Marder, Bernini’s Architectural Drawings. An Extended Edition of Brauer and Wittkover`s Catalogue of 1931, Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, 2026, 840 p., 2 vol.
ARGUMENT : Published in 1931, Brauer and Wittkower’s catalog of Bernini’s drawings remains among the most influential and frequently cited books ever issued by the Bibliotheca Hertziana–Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome. Like an oracle, it set a new standard of study in the nascent field of baroque design.
This volume not only brings this work to the attention of English readers but it contributes to the historiography of the field while bringing the work up to date for a new generation.

Alejandro Vergara-Sharp, Clara Peeters, Los Angeles, Getty Publications, 2025, 128 p.
ARGUMENT : Clara Peeters (ca. 1587–1636)—a Flemish still-life painter—was one of the most talented and creative artists among the early practitioners of this genre in Europe during the early seventeenth century. She specialized in paintings of food and was prominent among the artists who shaped the traditions of the Netherlandish ontbitjes (breakfast pieces) and banketjes (banquet pieces). Not only was she part of the first generation to specialize in this type of still-life painting, Peeters was the only Flemish woman known to have focused on genre painting in the early seventeenth century. Indeed, she was one of only a few women to dedicate her professional life to painting in early modern Europe. In this monograph, author Alejandro Vergara-Sharp discusses what is known of Peeters’s biography while presenting the historical and cultural context behind her art, style, and techniques. Clara Peeters establishes the artist as a leader in her field by examining Peeters’s artistry and the material culture reflected in her paintings. This timely volume sheds light on the limitations that Peeters encountered because of her gender, and how she responded to them in her art, while assessing her importance as a painter of still life.

Jaime Cuadrillo, Paula Mues (dir.), Tan lejos, tan cerca.

Isabelle Lores-Chavez, Plaster Casts in the Life and Art of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Paintains. Absence and Presence, Leyden, Brill, 2025, 320 p.
ARGUMENT : In the early modern Dutch Republic, plaster casts offered artists a way to overcome limitations of space and time, and to define themselves. This book presents the first comprehensive account of the impact of plaster casts on the artistic practice, intellectual endeavors, and social status of seventeenth-century Dutch painters.
These modest objects were, in fact, real works of sculpture, incorporated into a variety of compositions where they signalled an artist’s ambitions and technical virtuosity. Marginalized in the history of Dutch art, plaster casts lie at the center of this study’s novel interpretations of paintings and drawings, paired with period sources.

M. Dirschauer, R. Gerrits, M. Föcking, A. Ryrie, (dir.), Practising Piety. Spiritual Intermediality and Devotion in Early Modern Europe, Leyden, Brill, 2025, 366 p.
ARGUMENT : Situated at the intersection of theology, history, literature, and the arts, this edited volume introduces the concept of spiritual intermediality and highlights its central role in early modern piety across various Christian denominations. The case studies present a diverse array of perspectives that explore different forms and functions of intermediality in devotional practices of 16th- and 17th-century Europe, thereby enhancing our understanding of the medial conditions and intermedial aspects of devotion during one of the most fruitful periods of devotional arts and practices in Europe.
By arguing that early modern devotion often relied on intermedial forms of expression to unfold its full semantic and performative potential, the volume sheds new light on the rich web of media that shaped early modern Christian culture.

Branko Mitrovic, Guarino Guarini. Baroque Architecture and Scholasticism, Leyden, Brill, 2025, 162 p.
ARGUMENT : The seventeenth-century polymath Guarino Guarini is today mainly remembered as one of the most prominent Baroque architects. However, he was also active in a number of other fields such as philosophy, mathematics and astronomy. Philosophically, Guarini is an exceptionally interesting figure because of his efforts to adjust his Counter-reformation Aristotelianism to the latest discoveries of the ongoing scientific revolution. While his philosophy belonged to so-called “second scholasticism,” unlike most other scholastic philosophers of the era he followed and was intensely interested in the latest scientific breakthroughs. The book analyses how his philosophical and scientific interests impacted his views on architectural theory and architectural design.

Lorenzo Pericolo, Deleuze’s Modern Baroque. The Fold, Leibniz, the Formless, and the Objectile, Harvey Miller, 2025, 271 p.
ARGUMENT : Gilles Deleuze’s The Fold (1988) is a vast reflection not only on Leibniz’s monadology, but also on the present and future of a new culture informed by a neo-Leibnizian approach to philosophy and the arts. Deleuze’s baroque is both a transhistorical epistemic model and an artistic manifesto. It proposes a “way of being” that thrives on a notion of “identity” as inherently manifold, potentially contradictory, open-ended, and contingent on infinity. It also outlines the principles of a contemporary aesthetics that relies on the work and theory of artists as varied as Paul Klee, Jean Dubuffet, and Simon Hantaï. In a neo-baroque society, the work of art becomes an objectile, a self-modulating machine able to operate through the input, but without the intervention, of an author. Focusing also on Deleuze and Guattari’s What is Philosophy? (1991), this book discusses theoretical questions crucial to artistic debates in the period 1950–1980: art as philosophy; artistic thinking as opposed or germane to philosophical (and scientific) thinking; painting and sculpture as metaphysical operations; the ground as both the origin and negation of art; color as the degree zero of painting; authorless art; and art as infinity. Interwoven with examples of works by Christian Bonnefoi, François Rouan, Robert Ryman, Martin Barré, and Robert Rauschenberg, these discussions shed light on the complexity of Deleuze’s investigations. The final section of the book centers on the reception of American minimalism in 1980s France and on the folding in architecture trend in the United States at the beginning of the 1990s. Here, works by Robert Morris, Carl Andre, Tony Smith, and Donald Judd are scrutinized as “preparatory” to the objectile, and Peter Eisenman’s theory and architectural projects in the aftermath of deconstructivism are assessed in light of Deleuze’s “fold”.

Karen L. Bowen, Dirk Imhof, The Burgeoning European Print Trade. The Distribution of Prints via the Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerpn, Brepols, « Studies in Baroque Art », 2025, 404 p.
ARGUMENT : The European print trade is an evocative topic. Not only art historians, but social, cultural, and economic historians all agree that it was of vital importance in the Early Modern Period, as the conveyer of established icons, as well as the most recent imagery and news. Yet, thus far it is often discussed solely on the basis of tantalizing, isolated case studies. Bowen and Imhof’s ground-breaking publication will address this significant lacuna by demonstrating in unprecedented detail how booksellers were routinely engaged in the extensive international distribution and sale of hundreds of thousands of prints annually between the mid-sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries. Based upon the exceptionally well-preserved archives of the renowned Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerp, this book presents the often-overlooked interwoven worlds of booksellers and print sellers, while documenting Antwerp’s continued fame for the production and distribution of prints. Together with a remarkable array of clients, ranging from the cultivated and influential elite to ordinary laymen, these figures provide palpable examples of suppliers, buyers, and middlemen that reveal how they interacted with one another. Simultaneously, this work illuminates numerous critical related topics, ranging from how prints were priced and the relative quantities in which they were sold, to the importance of national and professional networks in these transactions. The result is an essential, novel study that clarifies how the print trade worked in practice during a burgeoning period in its evolution.

Brendan C. McMahon, Iridescence and the Image. Material Thinking in the Early Modern Spanish World, Penn State University Press, 2025, 224 p.
ARGUMENT : At the turn of the seventeenth century, people in Spain and Mexico were fascinated by iridescence. Artists stretched the capacities of conventional media in attempts to capture its shifting hues, while others integrated iridescent materials directly into their work. At the same time, naturalists strove to convey the changing colors of these substances in printed texts, theologians and political commentators invoked them in tracts and treatises, and playwrights and poets wove them through the scripts of comedies and into the stanzas of sonnets. In Iridescence and the Image, Brendan C. McMahon explores this preoccupation with such materials—including shot fabric, hummingbird feathers, mother of pearl, and opals—in the early modern Spanish world. Taking the virtuosic renderings of tornasol (shot silk) by the Spanish painter Antonio de Pereda (1611–1678) as a point of departure, he shows that the ubiquity of these materials in a broad array of period cultural productions stemmed from the ways in which their unique properties undermined trust in visual perception—and in visual images themselves. Ultimately, McMahon argues, iridescence provided a way for people to grapple with profound questions about seeming and being, deception and revelation, and the nature of truth itself.

Angela Vanhaelen, Opacity. Blackness and the Art of the Dutch Republic, Penn State University Press, 2025, 204 p.
ARGUMENT : As Dutch merchants became drivers of the transatlantic slavery business in the seventeenth century, Dutch art increasingly used Blackness to signal slavery and servitude. In this brilliant and pathbreaking work, Angela Vanhaelen proposes new ways of looking at Dutch paintings that do not equate Blackness with enslavement. Vanhaelen reframes the conversation on Netherlandish art by placing seventeenth-century domestic scenes and portraits in dialogue with images of trading forts, markets, and plantations in West Africa and Brazil. She argues that Dutch paintings depicting enslaved Black Africans—for example, Frans Hals’s Family Group in a Landscape—not only obscure information about the institution of slavery but fail to capture the resistance and dissent of people who did not conform to the anti-Black world created by Dutch art. Opacity leads readers to grapple with difficult and complex questions: How do we reconcile images of peace and prosperity with the horror of the slave trade? How do we teach imagery of Black people as enslaved without reinforcing anti-Black racism? Can we interpret dehumanizing imagery in ways that consider the complexities of enslavement? Refusing to view Dutch pictures on their own terms, Opacity recognizes the historical persistence of non-sovereign positions, anticolonial settlements, non-patriarchal homeplaces, open-ended forms of religion and culture, as well as the possibilities of oppositional modes of world-making. This important, thought-provoking book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Black studies and early modern European art history as well as general readers looking for a fresh approach to Dutch art of the period.

Elisabeth Currie, Street Style. Art and Dress in the Time of Caravaggio, Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, 2025, 200 p.
ARGUMENT : In late sixteenth-century Rome, artists found inspiration in bustling streets and taverns, depicting soldiers, Romani fortune tellers, sex workers, and servants among the city’s poorest inhabitants. Street Style explores these hidden lives, uncovering how the stories of ordinary people are preserved through their clothing and appearances in art. Written records highlight the harsh conditions faced by marginalized groups, while prints and paintings often promoted visual stereotypes. With fresh interpretations of notable works by Caravaggio and his followers, this book reveals the complex social meanings of dress and the ways art captured and shaped the real-life struggles of early modern Italy’s lower classes.

Lucia Trigilia (dir.), L’altare barocco nella Sicilia iblea. Modelli architettonici, apparati, macchine sceniche, Rome, De Luca, 2025, 272 p.

L. Blanc-Bénon, N. Rialland (dir.), Jacqueline Lichtenstein.

Damien Tellas, Michel Dorigny, 1616-1665.

Valerio Mezzolani, Adornate e incoronate.

Francesca Cappelletti, Francesco Freddolini (dir.), Barocco globale.

Emanuele Gambuti, Altari, Cripte, Confessiones. Architettura e liturgia neil Seicento romano, Rome, Campisano, 2025, 416 p.

Susanna Berger, The Deformation: Attention and Discernment in Catholic Reformation Art and Architecture, Princeton University Press, 2025, 336 p.
ARGUMENT : During the Catholic Reformation, patrons, artists, architects, and viewers, especially in Rome, were strongly drawn to visual and spatial distortions or “deformations”—works of art and architecture that were designed to be visually incomprehensible, at least initially. From Borromini’s San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in Rome to the attention-grabbing prospettiva in the city’s Palazzo Spada and the anamorphoses that define the corridors and walls of Minim and Jesuit buildings, The Deformation explores what this intriguing phenomenon reveals about contemporary religious belief, optics, and the natural sciences, as well as wider questions about attention and discernment.
Failing to conform to an established ideal, deformations required a “reformation” to achieve that ideal. Anamorphic deformations, for example, could only be reformed into clarity when viewed from a particular angle or through a special mirror. Susanna Berger examines how deformations were experienced by beholders, and how they were embraced or opposed by critics. The book shows how deformations and related works—whether altar tabernacles, ephemeral religious architecture, churches, monumental sundials, colonnades with accelerated perspective, illusionistic frescoes, turned ivories, or painted anamorphoses—focused observers’ attention on theological mysteries and the social power and sophistication of patrons. The book’s rich illustrations include two gatefolds and some anamorphic images that can be seen without distortion by using an included reflective insert as a mirror.
Looking at writings as well as visual works in multiple artistic media not typically considered in relation to each other, The Deformation offers a new interpretation of deformation that highlights the delay between perception and discernment.

E. A. Honig, J. Noorman, T. Weststeijn, Women: Female Roles in Art and Society of the Netherlands, 1500–1950, Leyde, Brill, 2025.
ARGUMENT : Long overdue in the history of the Netherlands Yearbook for History of Art, this volume foregrounds women as creators, patrons, buyers, and agents of change in the arts of the Low Countries. Venturing beyond the participation of ‘exceptional’ individuals, chapters investigate how women produced paintings, sculptures, scientific illustrations, and tapestries as well as their role in architectural patronage and personalized art collections. Teasing out a variety of socio-economic, legal, institutional, and art-theoretical dimensions of female agency, the volume highlights the role of visual culture in women’s lived experience and self-representation, asking to what extent women challenged, subverted, or confirmed societal norms in the Netherlands.

Julia Vazquez, Velázquez, Painter & Curator, Leyde, Brill, 2025,
ARGUMENT : This book is the first to address the curatorial career of Diego Velázquez, painter to King Philip IV of Spain and chamberlain of his royal palace. It investigates the role that Velázquez played in overseeing the display of the Habsburg art collection, then the richest in the western world, and the role, in turn, that this practice played in his creative trajectory between his arrival at the Spanish court in 1623 and his death in 1660. This book thus recasts Velázquez’s career as an episode in the history of the curator.

Leendert van der Miesen, Marin Mersenne and the Study of Harmony. From Sound to Music, Amsterdam University Press, 2025, 362 p.
ARGUMENT : Marin Mersenne and the Study of Harmony delves into the central role of music among the early modern sciences by focusing on the work of the French polymath Marin Mersenne (1588–1648). Although now regarded more as an art than a science, music was for many early modern scholars a universal science for studying the harmonies present in all beings. For Mersenne, music’s ability to be quantified while being experienced aesthetically meant that it was the central science to approximate the sounding and inaudible harmonies present in the world and universe at large. Bringing together Mersenne’s interests in the physics of sound and hearing, musical composition, instruments, curiosities, and music from outside Europe, this book shows why so many scholars were drawn to music and how music was at the center of the early modern debate on the foundations of knowledge.

Marco Faini (éd.), Doubting Women in Early Modern Italy. Gender, Uncertainty, and Agency, Amsterdam University Press, 2025, 180 p.
ARGUMENT : This book explores early modern Italian women as agents of doubt. While women were often considered prone to doubt as a result of their natural “weakness,” the essays gathered here reverse this view, demonstrating how women were able to embrace doubt as a means to expand their agency. Using doubt to contest both official narratives as well as religious and civil practices, women were able to carve out a space of their own in contemporary culture and society. The volume covers a period from the late fifteenth to the mid seventeenth centuries, offering critical insight into early modern doubt and investigating how doubt, like other categories of thought, could be gendered. Contributors address the topics of doubt and the Querelle des Femmes, religion, writing, and social networks. The volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to early modern doubt, combining gender studies with religious history, the history of literature, social history, and the history of science.

Richard Neer, Painting as a Way of Life. Philosophy and Practice in French Art, 1620–1660, Chicago, The Chicago University Press, 2025.
ARGUMENT : In this wide-ranging study, Richard Neer shows how French painters of the seventeenth century developed radically new ways to connect art, perception, and ethics. Cutting across traditional boundaries of classicism and realism, Neer addresses four case studies: Nicolas Poussin, renowned for marrying ancient philosophy and narrative painting; Louise Moillon, who pioneered French still life in the 1630s; Georges de La Tour, a painter of intense and introspective nocturnes; and the Brothers Le Nain, specialists in genre and portraiture who inspired Courbet, Manet, and other painters of modern life. Setting these artists in dialogue with Montaigne, Descartes, Pascal, and others, ranging from the studios of Rome to the streets of Paris, this book provides fresh accounts of essential artworks—some well-known, others neglected—and new ways to approach the relation of art, theory, and daily life.

Todd P. Olson, Ribera’s Repetitions. Paper and Canvas in Seventeenth-Century Spanish Naples, Penn State University Press, 2025, 264 p.
ARGUMENT : The seventeenth-century Valencian artist Jusepe de Ribera spent most of his career in Spanish Viceregal Naples, where he was known as “Lo Spagnoletto,” or “the Little Spaniard.” Working under the patronage of Spanish viceroys, Ribera held a special position bridging two worlds. In Ribera’s Repetitions, art historian Todd P. Olson sheds new light on the complexity of Ribera’s artwork and artistic methods and their connections to the Spanish imperial project. Drawing from a diverse range of sources, including poetry, literature, natural history, philosophy, and political history, Olson presents Ribera’s work in a broad context. He examines how Ribera’s techniques, including rotation, material decay (through etching), and repetition, influenced the artist’s drawings and paintings. Many of Ribera’s works featured scenes of physical suffering—from Saint Jerome’s corroded skin and the flayed bodies of Saint Bartholomew and Marsyas to the ragged beggar-philosophers and the eviscerated Tityus. But far from being the result of an individual sadistic predilection, Olson argues, Ribera’s art was inflected by the legacies of the Reconquest of Spain and Neapolitan coloniality. Ribera’s material processes and themes were not hermetically sealed in the studio; rather, they were engaged in the global Spanish Empire. Pathbreaking and deeply interdisciplinary, this copiously illustrated book offers art history students and scholars a means to see Ribera’s art anew.

SOMMAIRE : Préface ; I. Vers le planétarium ; II.

Lesley Stevenson, Louise Moillon, Los Angeles, Getty Publications, 2025, 112 p.
ARGUMENT : The life and career of Louise Moillon (1609/10–1696) offers a fascinating case study of a supremely talented artist whose posthumous reputation has been mired in invisibility. Born and raised in Paris, Moillon was the sole woman in a circle of Calvinist Protestant émigrés who brought their tradition of still-life painting with them from Flanders. During her lifetime, she was able to enjoy a degree of professional independence and attract enough recognition to be regarded as on a level with her male counterparts, yet her exquisite work and enigmatic story are little known today. This illustrated biography examines some of the ways in which Moillon’s story has been represented since the revival of interest in her work and draws on recent scholarship to situate the painter in her rightful place. Offering a sweeping exploration of the genre of still life, this book also chronicles how a woman in early modern France was able to capture the attention of the artistic world while dissecting why her prominence waned in the centuries following her death.

Emilio Russo, Patrizia Tosini, Andrea Zezza (dir.), Poesia e pittura nel Seicento. Giovan Battista Marino e la « meravigliosa » passione, cat. expo. (Rome, Galleria Borghese, 19 novembre 2024-9 février 2025), Rome, Officina Libraria-Galleria Borghese, 2024, 296 p.

Stella Rudolph, Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodino, Carlo Maratti (1625-1713).

Genevieve Warwick, The Mirror of Art. Painting and Reflection in Early Moderne Visual Culture, The Cambridge University Press, 2024, 440 p.
ARGUMENT : One of the key pictorial developments of Renaissance art was a conceptualisation of painting as a mirror reflection of the visible world. The idea of painting as specular was argued in Renaissance art theory, demonstrated in art practice, and represented in painting itself. Both within the artist’s workshop and within pictorial representation, the mirror-image became the instrument, the emblem, and the conceptual definition of what a painting was. In this volume, Genevieve Warwick brings a dual focus to the topic through an exploration of the early modern elision of the picture plane with the mirror – image. She considers the specular configuration of Renaissance painting from various thematic points of view to offer a fully interdisciplinary analysis of the mirror analogy that pervaded not only art theory and art-making, but also the larger cultural spheres of philosophy, letters, and scientific observation. Warwick’s volume recasts our understanding of the inter-visual relationships between disciplines, and their consequences for a specular definition of Renaissance painting.

David Pullins, The Mobile Image from Watteau to Boucher, Los Angeles, The Getty research Institute, 2024.
ARGUMENT : Reframing long-held assumptions about what distinguishes fine from decorative art, this innovative study explores a mode of making, seeing, and thinking that slices across eighteenth-century visual culture. This book provides a new way of thinking about eighteenth-century French art and visual culture by prioritizing production over reception. Abandoning the ideologically driven discourse that distinguished fine from decorative art between the 1690s and 1770s, The Mobile Image reveals how the two have been inextricably bound from the earliest stages of artistic instruction through the daily life of painters’ workshops. In this study, author David Pullins defines artisanal and artistic means of learning, seeing, and making through a system of “mobile images”: motifs that were effectively engineered for mobility and designed never to be definitive, always awaiting replication and circulation. He examines the careers of Antoine Watteau, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and François Boucher, situating them against a much broader cast of actors—such as printmakers, publishers, anonymous studio assistants, and architects, among others—to place eighteenth-century painting within a wider context of media and making. David Pullins is Jayne Wrightsman Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he is responsible for seventeenth-and eighteenth-century French, Italian, and Spanish painting.

Sarah A. Bendall, Serena Dyer (dir.), Embodied Experiences of Making in Early Modern Europe. Bodies, Gender, and Material Culture, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024.
ARGUMENT : Processes of making in early modern Europe were both tacit and embodied. Whether making pottery, food, or textiles, the processes of manual production rested on an intersensory connection between mind, body, and object. This volume focuses on the body of the maker to ask how processes of making, experimenting, experiencing, and reconstructing illuminate early modern assumptions and understandings around manual labour and material life. Answers can be gleaned through both recapturing past skills and knowledge of making and by reconstructing past bodies and bodily experiences using recreative and experimental approaches. In drawing attention to the body, this collection underlines the importance of embodied knowledge and sensory experiences associated with the making practices of historically marginalised groups, such as craftspeople, women, domestic servants, and those who were colonised, to confront biases in the written archive. The history of making is found not only in technological and economic innovations which drove ‘progress’ but also in the hands, minds, and creations of makers themselves.

Barbara Laux, Claude III Audran, Arbiter of the French Arabesque, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024, 252 p.
ARGUMENT : Claude III Audran, Arbiter of the French Arabesque is the first substantial biographical study of Claude III Audran, a late 17th- and early 18th-century master of ornament and a proponent of cutting-edge design who took inspiration from contemporary sources. This work investigates Audran’s accomplishments and the factors that impacted the longevity and arc of his successful career, taking into consideration the contextual variables that influenced and shaped his work. Audran’s achievements bridge an important period with the eclipse of the Guild Maîtrise and the rise of the Académie royale. Audran subcontracted young artists, such as Watteau, Lancret, and Desportes, in order to circumvent restrictions on guild practice enacted by the crown. Looking at his commissions not only reveals the elite taste of his patrons, including Louis XIV, but also Audran’s ability to use elements from popular culture to animate his arabesques, which created hallmarks of rococo interior design.

SOMMAIRE. Introduction. Conclusion.

Laura Moure Cecchini, Baroquemania. Italian visual culture and the construction of national identity, 1898-1945, Manchester, Manchester University Press, 2023, 288 p.
ARGUMENT : Baroquemania explores the intersections of art, architecture and criticism to show how reimagining the Baroque helped craft a distinctively Italian approach to modern art. Offering a bold reassessment of post-unification visual culture, the book examines a wide variety of media and ideologically charged discourses on the Baroque, both inside and outside the academy. Key episodes in the modern afterlife of the Baroque are addressed, notably the Decadentist interpretation of Gianlorenzo Bernini, the 1911 universal fairs in Turin and Rome, Roberto Longhi’s historically grounded view of Futurism, architectural projects in Fascist Rome and the interwar reception of Adolfo Wildt and Lucio Fontana’s sculpture. Featuring a wealth of visual materials, Baroquemania offers a fresh look at a central aspect of Italy’s modern art.

Jean-Baptiste Brenet, Le Dehors dedans.

Marisa Anne Bass, The Monument’s End : Public and the Modern Republic, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2024, 280 p.
ARGUMENT : Monuments occupy a controversial place in nations founded on principles of freedom and self-governance. It is no accident that when we think of monuments, we think of statues modeled on legacies of conquest, domination, and violence. The Monument’s End reveals how the artists, architects, poets, and scholars of the early modern Netherlands contended with the profound disconnect between the public monument and the ideals of republican government. Their experiences offer vital lessons about the making, reception, and destruction of monuments in the present. In the seventeenth century, the newly formed Dutch Republic dominated world trade and colonized vast overseas territories even as it sought to shed the trappings of its imperial past. Marisa Anne Bass describes the frustrated attempts by figures such as Rembrandt van Rijn and playwright and poet Joost van den Vondel to reimagine public memory for their emergent nation. She shows how the most celebrated age of Dutch art was more an age of bronze than of gold, one in which the pursuit of freedom from domination was constantly challenged by the commercial ambitions of empire. Exploring how the artists and intellectuals of this vibrant century asked questions that still resonate today, this beautifully illustrated book discusses works by contemporary artists such as Spencer Finch and Thomas Hirschhorn and offers new perspectives on monuments like the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and events such as the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

ARGUMENT : Listening to What You See brings together more than twenty-five scholarly essays, reviews, and shorter contributions by Peter Hecht, preceded by an introduction on what he thinks his life in art history has taught him. The title indicates what his collected papers have in common: together they represent an attitude of listening to what you see. Hecht is very suspicious of applying a method and believes that looking at an image until it speaks is essential to understanding it. Apart from a few scholarly reviews, Listening to What You See also contains a sample of Hecht’s writings for the public at large, and some of his best-known critical papers are included here. It covers a range of different topics, including defending public art collections, showing what art can mean in times of crisis when it is not accessible (as was the case when Covid forced the museums to shut down), and talking about what art may do for us–provided that we listen.

Judith Noorman, Feike Dietz (dir.), Objects, Commodities and Material Cultures in the Dutch Republic. Exploring Early Modern Materiality Across Disciplines, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024.
ARGUMENT : How did objects move between places and people, and how did they reshape the Republic’s arts, cultures and sciences? ‘Objects’ were vitally significant for the early modern Dutch Republic, which is known as an early consumer society, a place famous for its exhaustive production of books, visual arts and scientific instruments. What happens when we push these objects and their materiality to the centre of our research? How do they invite us to develop new perspectives on the early modern Dutch Republic? And how do they contest the boundaries of the academic disciplines that have traditionally organized our scholarship? In Objects, Commodities and Material Cultures, the interdisciplinary community of specialists around the Amsterdam Centre for the Study of Early Modernity innovatively explores the diverse early modern world of objects. Its contributors take a single object or commodity as a point of departure to study and discuss various aspects of early modern art, culture and history: from natural objects to consumer goods, from knowledge instruments to artistic materials. The volume aims to unravel how objects have moved through regions, cultures and ages, and how objects impacted people who lived and worked in the Dutch Republic.

Catherine Levesque, Jacob van Ruisdael’s Ecological Landscape, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024, 236 p.
ARGUMENT : This book examines Jacob van Ruisdael’s treatment of five subjects—dunes, grainfields, ruins, rushing water, and woodlands—that recur throughout his career. The paintings, though fictive, show close attention to the complexities of particular environments that can be fruitfully considered “ecological.” The pattern of Ruisdael’s reworking each environment and associated phenomena shows him as laboring over these themes. His work across media conveys something of his demanding and methodical procedure as he sought to achieve pictorially the force, temporality, vitality, and motion of nature. Ruisdael’s paintings decenter humankind within familiar yet reimagined landscapes. His ability to depict nature’s dynamism provided an alternative vision at a foundational moment when landscape, increasingly manipulated and controlled, was most often considered property and investment. His focus on the techniques and processes of his own work to render these entities was essential to his ecological perspective and invites a similar recognition from an attentive viewer.

Adam Jasienzki, Praying to Portraits. Audience, Identity, and the Inquisition in the Early Modern Hispanic World, University Park, Penn State University Press, 2024, 232 p.
ARGUMENT : In Praying to Portraits, art historian Adam Jasienski examines the history, meaning, and cultural significance of a crucial image type in the early modern Hispanic world: the sacred portrait. Across early modern Spain and Latin America, people prayed to portraits. They prayed to “true” effigies of saints, to simple portraits that were repainted as devotional objects, and even to images of living sitters depicted as holy figures. Jasienski places these difficult-to-classify image types within their historical context. He shows that rather than being harbingers of secular modernity and autonomous selfhood, portraits were privileged sites for mediating an individual’s relationship to the divine. Using Inquisition records, hagiographies, art-theoretical treatises, poems, and plays, Jasienski convincingly demonstrates that portraiture was at the very center of broader debates about the status of images in Spain and its colonies. Highly original and persuasive, Praying to Portraits profoundly revises our understanding of early modern portraiture. It will intrigue art historians across geographical boundaries, and it will also find an audience among scholars of architecture, history, and religion in the early modern Hispanic world.

Mary B. Quinn, Sense and Spectacle in the Age of Philip IV. Performing in Word, Music, and Image, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024, 212 p.
ARGUMENT : This book accounts for the outpouring of celebrations in the Habsburg Empire upon the 1657 birth of Felipe Próspero, heir to Philip IV of Spain. These celebrations allow us to interrogate the shifting uses of performance in the empire’s center and periphery. Such spectacles could work to contain and manipulate public sentiment, but at other moments they questioned sanctioned power structures. A study of zarzuela texts, opera libretti, notated music, paintings, poems, and historical documents shows that an array of people took advantage of this festive moment to question the empire’s policies in surprising ways. Sensorial experience played a crucial role during these celebrations. For its part, the Crown engaged a variety of senses, especially sight, sound, and smell, in order to augment the impact of royal spectacles. But simultaneously, those who questioned the Crown also did so through an engagement of the sensorial world.

Miguel Ibánez Aristondo, Ecological Imperialism in Early Modern Spanish Narratives. Excavating the Environmental Conflicts of the Iberian Globalization, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024, 236 p.
ARGUMENT : How are the environmental conflicts of our time intertwined with the legacies of Spanish imperialism and early modern globalization? In Ecological Imperialism in Early Modern Spanish Narratives: Excavating the Environmental Conflicts of the Iberian Globalization, Miguel Ibáñez Aristondo argues that to understand the historical ramifications of the ecological crisis, it is imperative to excavate the fragmented histories and entangled viewpoints associated with European imperialism. Drawing on early modern Iberian, Indigenous, and European sources, the book interrogates how early modern debates regarding war, free trade, abundance, property, race, sovereignty, and history were deeply entwined within ideas and theories driving the relationship between humans and the environment. By exploring the conflict-ridden experiences arising from Spanish imperialism, the book argues that ecological crises have given rise to divergent visions and social hierarchies over time, driven by environmental conflicts opposing social justice and collective life to capital accumulation and imperial competition.

Mónica Domínguez Torres, Pearls for the Crown. Art, Nature, and Race in the Age of Spanish Expansion, University Park, Penn State University Press, 2024, 218 p.
ARGUMENT : In the age of European expansion, pearls became potent symbols of imperial supremacy. Pearls for the Crown demonstrates how European art legitimated racialized hierarchies and inequitable notions about humanity and nature that still hold sway today. When Christopher Columbus encountered pristine pearl beds in southern Caribbean waters in 1498, he procured the first source of New World wealth for the Spanish Crown, but he also established an alternative path to an industry that had remained outside European control for centuries. Centering her study on a selection of key artworks tied to the pearl industry, Mónica Domínguez Torres examines the interplay of materiality, labor, race, and power that drove artistic production in the early modern period. Spanish colonizers exploited the expertise and forced labor of Native American and African workers to establish pearling centers along the coasts of South and Central America, disrupting the environmental and demographic dynamics of their overseas territories. Drawing from postcolonial theory, material culture studies, and ecocriticism, Domínguez Torres demonstrates how, through use of the pearl, European courtly art articulated ideas about imperial expansion, European superiority, and control over nature, all of which played key roles in the political circles surrounding the Spanish Crown. This highly anticipated interdisciplinary study will be welcomed by scholars of art history, the history of colonial Latin America, and ecocriticism in the context of the Spanish colonies.

Christopher R. Marshall, Artemisia Gentileschi and the Business of Art, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2024, 312 p.
ARGUMENT : Art has long been viewed as a calling—a quasi-religious vocation that drives artists to seek answers to humanity’s deepest questions. Yet the art world is a risky, competitive business that requires artists to make strategic decisions, especially if the artist is a woman. In Artemisia Gentileschi and the Business of Art, Christopher Marshall presents a new account of the life, work, and legacy of the Italian Baroque painter, revealing how she built a successful four-decade career in a male-dominated field—and how her business acumen has even influenced the resurrection of her reputation today, when she has been transformed from a footnote of art history to a globally famous artist and feminist icon. Combining the most recent research with detailed analyses of newly attributed paintings, the book highlights the business considerations behind Gentileschi’s development of a trademark style as she marketed herself to the public across a range of Italian artistic centers. The disguised self-portraits in her early Florentine paintings are reevaluated as an effort to make a celebrity brand of her own image. And, challenging the common perception that Gentileschi’s only masterpieces are her early Caravaggesque paintings, the book emphasizes the importance of her neglected late Neapolitan works, which are reinterpreted as innovative responses to the conventional practices of Baroque workshops. Artemisia Gentileschi and the Business of Art shows that Gentileschi’s remarkable success as a painter was due not only to her enormous talent but also to her ability to respond creatively to the continuously evolving trends and challenges of the Italian Baroque art world.

Felipe Pereda, The Man Who Broke Michelangelo’s Nose, Penn State University Press, 2024, 288 p.
ARGUMENT : Renaissance sculptor Pietro Torrigiano has long held a place in the public imagination as the man who broke Michelangelo’s nose. Indeed, he is known more for that story than for his impressive prowess as an artist. This engagingly written and deeply researched study by Felipe Pereda, a leading expert in the field, teases apart legend and history and reconstructs Torrigiano’s work as an artist. Torrigiano was, in fact, one of the most fascinating characters of the sixteenth century. After fighting in the Italian wars under Cesare Borgia, the Florentine artist traveled across four countries, working for such patrons as Margaret of Austria in the Netherlands and the Tudors in England. Toriggiano later went to Spain, where he died in prison, accused of heresy by the Inquisition for breaking a sculpture of the Virgin and Child that he had made with his own hands. In the course of his travels, Torrigiano played a crucial role in the dissemination of the style and the techniques that he learned in Florence, and he interacted with local artisanal traditions and craftsmen, developing a singular terracotta modeling technique that is both a response to the authority of Michelangelo and a unique testimony to artists’ mobility in the period. As Pereda shows, Torrigiano’s life and work constitute an ideal example to rethink the geography of Renaissance art, challenging us to reconsider the model that still sees the Renaissance as expanding from an Italian center into the western periphery.

David Armando, Marcella Campanelli, Pasquale Palmieri (dir.), I meraviglioso in età moderna. Dimensioni culturali, scientifiche e religiose, Rome, Viella, 2024, 194 p.

Claudia Goldstein, Beuckelaer and the Art of Dining. Northern Painting, Food, and Social Class in Early Modern Italy, Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2024, 188 p.
ARGUMENT : Sixteenth-century Flemish painter Joachim Beuckelaer produced dozens of large-scale paintings of contemporary working women and men selling, presenting, and preparing a visually stunning array of foodstuffs for the viewer. These were new subjects in Antwerp and even newer in Italy, where elite merchants and nobles like Margaret of Parma displayed them as they were meant to be displayed: in dining rooms and spaces used for entertaining. This study explores the cross-cultural meanings of Beuckelaer’s distinctly Northern European kitchen and market scenes in the context of North Italian dining and food culture. Examining the functions of Beuckelaer’s strange and new subject matter, Goldstein situates his paintings and those of his closest Italian follower, Vincenzo Campi, in the physical space of the dining room, addressing dining practice and the class and gender tensions inherent in a setting that placed both elite and non-elite viewers before life-sized renderings of their employees, and themselves.

Jane MacAvock (dir.), Jean Daret (1614-1668).

Marika Knowles, Pierrot and his world: art, theatricality, and the marketplace in France, 1697-1945, Manchester, Manchester University Press, 2024, 288 p.
ARGUMENT : Pierrot, a theatrical stock character known by his distinctive costume of loose white tunic and trousers, is a ubiquitous figure in French art and culture. This richly illustrated book offers an account of Pierrot’s recurrence in painting, printmaking, photography and film, tracing this distinctive type from the art of Antoine Watteau to the cinema of Occupied France. As a visual type, Pierrot thrives at the intersection of theatrical and marketplace practices. From Watteau’s Pierrot (c. 1720) and Édouard Manet’s The Old Musician (1862) to Nadar and Adrien Tournachon’s Pierrot the Photographer (1855) and the landmark film Children of Paradise (1945), Pierrot has given artists a medium through which to explore the marketplace as a form for both social life and creative practice. Simultaneously a human figure and a theatrical mask, Pierrot elicits artistic reflection on the representation of personality in the marketplace.

Stefano Pierguidi, « Ed in vano l’ho cercato in terra ».

Afro-Hispanic Painter in the Age of Velazquez, cat. expo. (New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 3 avril-16 juillet 2023), New Haven-Londres, Yale University Press, 2023, 176 p.
ARGUMENT : A provocative study of a freedman painter that recognizes the labor of enslaved artists and artisans in seventeenth-century Spain. Diego Velázquez’s portrait of Juan de Pareja (ca. 1608–1670) has long been a landmark of European art, but this provocative study focuses on its subject: an enslaved man who went on to build his own successful career as an artist. This catalogue—the first scholarly monograph on Pareja— discusses the painter’s ties to the Madrid School of the 1660s and revises our understanding of artistic production during Spain’s Golden Age, with a focus on enslaved artists and artisans. The authors illuminate the highly skilled labor within Seville’s multiracial society; the role of Black saints and confraternities in the promotion of Catholicism among enslaved populations; and early twentieth-century scholar Arturo Schomburg’s project to recover Pareja’s legacy. The book also includes the first illustrated and annotated list of known works attributed to Pareja.

Tania De Nile, Fantasmagorie.
