Took the time to update my Blaugust post template today, and figured I’d write a little plug I can share in the places I share things. Usually discord.
We’re just shy of seven years since my first post. While I certainly don’t post consistently or regularly anymore,I always participate in Blaugust and credit my blog with quite a lot. I was originally made aware of the event by Justin Olivetti, the author of BioBreak. I was ready for some change so I dived into the event headfirst and kept going daily for a couple of years.
While I eventually backed away from daily posting, I would continue writing journal entries regularly in many different places, including drafts on this blog. While I was always prone to self-dialogue, it has become a habit to do so with writing. I actually consider that a blessing. I find it interesting to go back and reread what my past selves wrote, though I do so rarely. In many ways those posts feel like they were written by someone else in an alternate universe.
It also kickstarted my return to higher education and helped me begin that process. One of my original entry requirements was a 500 word essay and since that was my minimum goal for a blog post and I was posting daily, that was an easy goal. There are a few changes one makes for an academic paper, but I find my natural writing style works well as a starting point. This would help again later when I took advantage of an opportunity to write and present an economics research paper both locally and at a regional conference. And that degree is a goal I’m still pursuing through several life changes.
So I feel I’ve gained much from writing, and I owe the initial momentum to Blaugust. I would encourage others to take a shot at it themselves.
