What Data We Collect and Why

We collect personal information that you provide to us. Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our website. The following specifies which information is collected, and how it is handled:

Email Forms

When you subscribe to our Newsletter your email address is retained in order to send the letter to you. You may remove your address from the list at any time by using the Unsubscribe link in the newsletter. If you are unable to locate the Unsubscribe link, please send us a message using the Contact Form on our About page.

Your Email Address is not used for any other purpose by the owner / operator of The CerebralRift.

Using the Contact Form on our About page will expose your email address to the administrators of this website. This information will never be used for promotion, sales, or any other purposes without your express permission. The only exception to this will be the lawful requests by law enforcement for this information.

Our email is hosted by Fast Mail. Please see their Security and Privacy statements for more information.

The Contact Form uses Letterbird to relay your emails to our Fast Mail account. Letterbird is a product from Good Enough Software and is subject to their Terms of Use and Privacy statements.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form. Note this includes linking to the profile of the service you used for authentication: Bluesky, Mastodon, or Micro.blog. This information is held on the website hosts (Micro.blog) servers.

Analytics

Unattributed uses Fathom Analytics for website statistics. Fathom is an excellent cookie-less, GDPR-compliant, privacy-respecting system. All information is hashed to avoid personally identifiable information from being accessible. All unnecessary information is discarded after processing, within seconds.

The upshot is: I never see any information that can identify anyone, and no information is stored that could be used to identify users of this site.

Cookies

Unattributed does not use cookies for tracking any users on the site.

Bubbles may place a cookie on your system to indicate you’ve voted for an article on this website.

Data sent to Advertisers

We have no advertisers, and do not share any information with third parties for the purposes of advertising or promotion.

Data from Embedded Content

I stopped embedding content back in 2017 after discovering issues with embeds that didn’t fail gracefully, and caused significant harm to this website. All third party sites like Spotify, BandCamp, YouTube, etc. are linked, but not embedded.

Any media on this website that is directly accessible is done using HTML media controls.

Who We Share Your Data With

As indicated in previous sections our service providers may be able to see your information. These include (but may not be limited to if I’ve forgotten any):

  • Micro.blog
  • Good Enough Software
  • Fast Mail
  • Fathom Analytics
  • Law Enforcement Agencies (If they have filed proper legal requests for the information.)

We do this to:

  • Comply with legal process;
  • Respond to requests from public and government authorities, including public and government authorities outside your country of residence;
  • Enforce our Terms of Service Agreement and other agreements;
  • Protect our operations;
  • Protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of our affiliates, you, or others;
  • Allow us to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain.

How Long We Retain Your Data

For our Newsletter your email address is retained only as long as it is part of the mailing list.

For our Contact Form any eMail sent to us is stored on the secure servers of our mail host for as long as deemed necessary. (Currently there are emails going back twelve years on their servers.) This is done, so I might be able to locate information about past issues that I have been notified about.

Fathom Analytics data is retained for the life of this website.

What Rights You Have Section

At any time you may withdraw your email address from our Newsletter if you have signed up for it.

Upon request, we will delete all correspondence with a specified email address. The email must originate from the same domain as the requested deletion.

We are unable to remove information from Fathom as there is no way to identify the information to be removed.

Other Information

This website occasionally uses harsh language. Be forewarned that by accessing this site you may be subjected to such language. Users under 13 years of age may need to have approval from their parents or guardians when accessing this site.

Protection of Personal Data

We use reasonable and appropriate physical, electronic, and administrative safeguards to protect personal data from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction, taking into account the nature of the Personal Data and risks involved in processing that information.
