A Daily Memory Journal for iPhone

Think back to two Thursdays ago. What happened that day? Most of us can’t say. The day was full, the way days are — somebody said something funny, the light was nice on the walk home — but nothing wrote any of it down.

A daily memory journal is the gentlest kind of journaling: a journal of memories rather than pages, one small memory from each day, saved before bed. Little Memory has been that kind of journal since 2011 — a quiet little time capsule holding over 1,000,000 memories from over 30,000 people, featured by Apple three times.

One memory a day

At the end of the day, write one sentence: the joke from dinner, the first rain of the season, the song that came on in the car. It takes about fifteen seconds — one line, and the day is kept.

And if journaling has never stuck for you, you’re in good company; that’s who Little Memory is for. A sentence asks so little of a tired evening that it actually gets written. (If you’ve loved the paper five-year memory books, this is the same gentle idea — there’s a page on the one line a day approach too.)

Your memories come back to you

This is the part that makes it a memory journal. Little Memory brings back what you wrote a week ago, a month ago, and a year ago — tonight’s sentence is a small gift you’re leaving for your future self. Sometimes an old line arrives on exactly the right day; people here call those happy coincidences. And as your years stack up, the journal reaches further and further back, until each day carries a little stack of this-date memories from your other years.

You don’t have to remember to look back, and that turns out to matter. Old notebooks wait politely on shelves, unread. These memories just come around again, one at a time, when they’ve had a few seasons to ripen.

It remembers for you

Evenings get away from everyone, so a gentle reminder arrives by email each night. You can save the day’s memory just by hitting reply — some nights that’s all the journaling you’ll want, and that’s plenty.

The little extras

I’ve been writing for almost 6 months, so everyday I get reminded of “old” mindsets 6, 3, 1 month(s) back, etc. I feel like now I have a place to honor the special moments while also reminding myself that everyday is possible.

Just for you

One-sentence memories tend to be the honest ones, so yours are always private by default. No social media login required, and support comes straight from the developer.

If the reason you’re here is that the days have started blurring together, there’s a page on remembering every day. Comparing journaling apps? See how Little Memory stacks up against the big ones, or take the little tour.

I’ve tried for years and years to keep a journal. This app is so simple I don’t “feel bad” writing a sentence or two and being done.
