Gold
Powdered gold mixed with gum and stored in a sea shell for use as a paintable gold ink in late-medieval manuscript illumination.
Shell gold is the manuscript-illuminator’s name for finely powdered metallic gold mixed with a water-soluble gum binder, traditionally stored and used from a half mussel-shell or scallop-shell at the workbench (hence the name). Where the related technique of manuscript gold involves laying full sheets of beaten gold leaf onto a glue mordant and burnishing to a mirror finish, shell gold is essentially a gold paint: a flowable suspension applied by brush like any ink or watercolour, producing a less brilliant but far more flexible gold mark that could be used for line work, lettering, fine ornament, and small areas where laid-leaf gilding would have been impractical or wasteful.
The preparation was technically demanding. Chapter CLX of Cennini’s Il Libro dell’Arte (c. 1400) gives a recipe: gold leaf is ground on a porphyry slab with beaten egg white (or gum arabic for work on parchment), then rinsed with water, leaving a fine gold-powder dispersion in gum which is then dried into the shell for storage. At point of use the dried gum-and-gold was re-wetted with water or thin gum-arabic solution and brushed onto the parchment like any pigment. Gold is too soft and ductile to grind to a fine powder directly; the grinding medium acts as a temporary matrix that allows the leaf to be broken into particles that suspend cleanly in the binder.
The technique was in continuous use in European manuscript illumination from the fourteenth through the eighteenth centuries, almost always in conjunction with laid gold leaf rather than as a replacement for it. The standard practice was to use burnished laid gold for the major decorated grounds (haloes, throne backgrounds, illuminated initials), and shell gold for the fine work over and around those grounds (line ornament, lettering details, the gold highlights of figures and drapery). The two techniques together appear across medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts: the late-fifteenth-century Flemish books of hours of the Ghent-Bruges school (where shell gold trompe-l’oeil borders are a documented feature), manuscripts attributed to the Ottoman court tradition, and the Mughal manuscripts of the Akbar period, where various tones of shell gold were used to illuminate borders.
The pigment never disappeared. Through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries shell gold continued in use for the high-grade decorative manuscript trade and for the embellishment of luxury bookbinding (gold-tooled leather, edge gilding). The nineteenth-century revival of medieval illumination as a fine-art technique under the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements brought shell gold back into active use; the calligrapher Edward Johnston documented and used shell gold in his illumination work, and the tradition extended to others in his circle. Contemporary calligraphers and manuscript-illumination practitioners still use the same essential technique, with the modern conservation-grade product sold by Cornelissen in London, Sennelier in Paris, and Daniel Smith in the United States as small dried buttons or shells of gold-powder-and-gum to be rehydrated at the workbench. By most accounts, the craft lineage reaches back at least six centuries without substantial interruption.
