Split Decisions is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #47.
Synopsis[edit]
- After Bart activates an invention by Professor Frink, copies of himself and everybody he touches in Springfield are created whenever they make a decision. Soon, some of the copies decide they want to kill Bart, and Bart must figure out how to turn off the machine to stop them.
Plot[edit]
Bart is at Professor Frink's lab working as his assistant when Frink needs to leave. He tells Bart not to touch anything, but Bart immediately ignores his instructions and looks for something to do. He finds what he thinks is a giant television, but it only shows camera footage from around Springfield. As Bart keeps playing around with the buttons, he gets zapped by the device and flung backward. Bart goes back to try that again and sees footage of himself on the screen. Bart then realizes that he's been cloned, although his clone doesn't think that's the case because the device is called the Multi-Dimensional Transexponential Fenestration Viewer. The Bart copies leave the lab, each splitting off into more Barts. As the original Bart skateboards through town, he realizes new copies are made every time he needs to make a decision. Bart skateboards past Moe's Tavern and touches Moe as he does, as another Bart skates over Moe's foot. Moe then has a copy appear, and Bart realizes that his powers are contagious to other people.
Bart goes by The Android's Dungeon and asks Comic Book Guy a question about comics, which results in many copies being made as they try to come up with an answer. Meanwhile, the Bart copies enter the store to steal comics. Bart skates past Lisa and Chief Wiggum, affecting them both too. He then goes home and tries to affect Homer, but he doesn't have any copies made. He also affects Marge, who uses her copies to clean the house. It also turns out that Ned Flanders isn't affected because he lets God make all his decisions.
Eventually, Bart realizes that some of the copies will come to the decision to try and kill him. Soon, an angry mob is chasing after Bart. Meanwhile, at the Simpson house, a copy of Homer is finally created, but he just watches television with the original Homer. As Bart skateboards away from the angry mob, he decides to go back to Frink's lab to turn the machine off. After forcing himself through the crowd of Frink copies, Bart jumps onto the Multi-Dimensional Transexponential Fenestration Viewer, which deactivates its effects. Frink tells Bart that he hopes he learned a valuable lesson, but Bart just wants to play around with more of Frink's inventions.
