Smethwick is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands, England. In 2019, the ward had a population of around 15,246.
It is located 4 miles (6 km) west of Birmingham city centre. Smethwick used to be in Staffordshire and then Worcestershire before being placed into the new West Midlands county.
Smethwick was recorded in the Domesday Book as Smedeuuich. Until the end of the 18th century it was a hamlet in the village of Harborne.
The world's oldest working engine, the Smethwick Engine, made by Boulton and Watt, originally stood near Bridge Street in Smethwick. It is now at Thinktank, a science museum in Birmingham.
Galton Bridge is a cast iron bridge in Smethwick. It was built by Thomas Telford in 1829 to carry a road across the new main line of the Birmingham Canal. When it was built, it was the highest single-span bridge in the world.
The M5 motorway runs along the western edge of the town. It has three train stations, Smethwick Galton Bridge, Smethwick Rolfe Street and The Hawthorns.
The Hawthorns, the home stadium of professional football club West Bromwich Albion, is in the north of Smethwick.
