Category:CS1 maint: deprecated archival service

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a tracking category for CS1 citations that have parameters holding a URL from a deprecated archive service. A February 2026 RFC deprecated the site archive.today and its associated URLs in TLDs .ph, .is, .md, .li, .fo, and .vn. Module:Citation/CS1 suppresses any parameter that holds an archive.today URL. It also suppresses parameters that are dependent on the offending parameter. For example, if |archive-url= holds an archive.is URL, the module will suppress |archive-date=, |archive-format= and |url-status= so that these dependent parameters do not cause the module to emit error messages.

In page-preview mode, no parameters are suppressed.

To repair, follow the directions in WP:DEADREF or specific pages such as Wikipedia:Archive.today guidance.

Pages with this condition are automatically placed in Category:CS1 maint: deprecated archival service.[a]

By default, Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2 error messages are visible to all readers and maintenance category messages are hidden from all readers.

To display maintenance messages, include the following text in your common CSS page or your specific skin's CSS page (common.css and skin.css respectively):

.mw-parser-output span.cs1-maint {display: inline;} /* display Citation Style 1 maintenance messages */

To display hidden-by-default error messages:

.mw-parser-output span.cs1-hidden-error {display: inline;} /* display hidden Citation Style 1 error messages */

Even with this CSS installed, older pages in Wikipedia's cache may not have been updated to show these error messages even though the page is listed in one of the tracking categories. A null edit will resolve that issue.

To hide normally-displayed error messages:

.mw-parser-output span.cs1-visible-error {display: none;} /* hide Citation Style 1 error messages */

You can personalize the display of these messages (such as changing the color), but you will need to ask someone who knows CSS or at WP:Simple talk if you do not understand how.

  1. Pages in the Book talk, Category talk, Draft talk, File talk, Help talk, MediaWiki talk, Module talk, Portal talk, Talk, Template talk, User, User talk, and Wikipedia talk namespaces are not included in the tracking categories. In addition, pages with names matching the patterns '/[Ss]andbox', '/[Tt]estcases', '/[^/]*[Ll]og', and '/[Aa]rchive' are not included in the tracking categories.
