- shellsharks.social 5/21/24 14:01 EDT5/21/24Setting aside the #security / #privacy concerns and the “are they just going to eventually mine these screenshots to feed their AI models” eventuality related to #Microsoft’s announced “AI-powered” #Recall feature, it just seems like it’ll be a huge resource hog. Taking constant screenshots, storing + indexing those screenshots and then having some “local” LLM/AI capability spinning/training on these images/data constantly seems like it’ll just eat up memory and storage space and cook your GPU…more...

- Bowser's crimes5/19/24In a previous note, I grumped a bit about how low-stakes the Super Mario Wonder plot is, specifically, how much of a nothing-burger Bowser’s actions were. So I decided to go back through the history of Mario games and list Bowser’s various crimes (attempted and successful) below…more...
- Mission Control snapshot5/18/24Here’s pretty much what my Mac desktops look like on a daily basis. I have a lot of apps open and tend to do a lot of multi-tasking.more...
- Powered by Castopod, Hosted by K&T Host5/16/24The Shellsharks Podcast is coming back! Where did it go? Why did it go? Well, life got a little busy, and I just didn’t make time for it I suppose. I really enjoyed the first run of the podcast but never got in a sustainable groove when it came to fielding new guests for the show. I really don’t want the show to be a solo operation, i.e. just me talking, and as cool as it would be to have a regular co-host, one thing I really enjoyed most about the experience was meeting with and talking to new and interesting people in and around the infosec / larger tech community. So this time around, my plan is to be more committed to building a pipeline of folks to come on the show and to a degree, expand what is regular topics of conversation. Notably, tying themes of infosec/cybersecurity with...more...
- Nostalgia Music5/15/24Responding to this post from Flamed Fury, I wanted to write about music that I found nostalgic or that I associate with certain memories. I’ll attempt to write these in a chronological fashion as best as my memory will allow… (Note: All music links are to Apple Music listings.)more...
- shellsharks.social 5/14/24 09:35 EDT5/14/24@nuintari In 1994, in the very early days of the Beanie Babies era my mom bought me an “Ally the Alligator” beanie baby ( https://beaniepedia.com/beanies/beanie-babies/ally-the-alligator/) at some small little store somewhere in Virginia or West Viriginia (can’t exactly remember). I was a big fan of stuffed animals as a kid and this one was my definite all-time favorite growing up.more...
- One of us5/14/24I recently came across this post where the author laments that the IndieWeb is “not for them”, simply because of their inability to implement Webmentions and thus (as they put it) the “IndieWeb is a social club for developers” only. (See also this one with respect to not feeling part of the “community”.)more...
- shellsharks.social 5/13/24 10:15 EDT5/13/24@ploum Right? Honestly though, what % of people are seeing, “Now powered by our AI” or anything AI-related and have a reaction that is not one the following…more...
- Songs I was feelin' in 20205/10/24I found an old note in my Simplenote archive (circa August 2020) titled “Favorite Songs”. I thought I’d share it here. Best I can tell, the first part of the list was a ranked “top 12” and everything else was just other songs I was feelin’ at the time.more...
- Crystal Six5/8/24Though the original Pokemon (Blue/Red) game will forever hold a particularly special place in my heart, I think of Pokemon Crystal as both my favorite and the best of the entire Pokemon series. With the recent legitimization of classic game emulators on iOS, and thus the rebirth of Delta, I once again spun up a Pokemon Crystal rom and did a playthrough. Even after all these years and countless playthroughs, it was still as fun as ever. To commemorate, I’ve decided to document my team, the “Crystal Six” below.more...

- shellsharks.social 5/3/24 15:27 EDT5/3/24Looking for a job in #infosec / #cybersecurity? Maybe keep an eye on the Microsoft careers portal. Budget and headcount seem to magically appear after incidents / cyber-disasters / getting absolutely dunked on by the DHS CSRB / etc…more...
- Ranking fry cuts5/2/24French fries are great. Duh!. But how they are cut makes a big difference in how great they can be. Here’s how I would rank different fry cuts 1-10:more...
- shellsharks.social 5/1/24 13:25 EDT5/1/24Are there any #artists or artistically-inclined #infosec people out there who would be interested in creating the Banner and/or Icon for the /c/cybersecurity community within infosec.pub ( @jerry ‘s Lemmy instance)? This would be unpaid but I’d be happy to feature you somehow via Fedi, my site or the community itself. The only parameters for the artwork would be… nothing obscene/harmful, nothing genAI, and preferably something “infosec”-related. Feel free to DM or respond here if interested.more...
- Be yourself.5/1/24I really enjoyed reading this piece by alexandra 🧡. The #indieweb is a place to be yourself, and find others who are, well.. who THEY are. Forget about likes, forget about follower counts, forget about page views. I have found, both in my own experience writing on my site as well as in my journey exploring other sites across the “indieweb” that it’s people being truly genuine in both their writing and their style that brings life back to the web.more...
