The Goblin in My Brain
Afraid I can’t come out today,
for there’s a goblin in my brain,
and if I were to bring him out,
I know full well that he would spout
a torrent of foul vitriol.
No, best to keep him in his hole.
At you, my friend? No, no! Dear, dear!
No, it’s not you who needs to fear.
The goblin turns his hate at me
and whispers things that I could be.
An actor, teacher—short of a king,
why, I could be most anything!
I could live just here, or there—
or Timbuktu—or Dublin, Eire.
And if I were to rule my time,
he tells me that I’d turn out fine.
Instead, I sit here, burning out,
and listening to the goblin shout.
