Hartman Triplet Quilts: Hedgehogs

A quilt with three spiky hedgehogs on a rich green background. The top and bottom edges have borders of pieced mushrooms in purple, orange, and creams colors. There are clumps of applique mushrooms between and around the hedgehogs.

The other two triplet quilts are: foxes and otters

The actual block is Elizabeth Hartman’s hedgehog pattern. They share brown fabric with the otters, two darker and one richer. I needed an appropriate accent and thought it would be fun to put in small mushrooms for a sense of scale. I mixed appliqué and piecing for the mushrooms, leading to some texture in the mid-quilt.

A closeup of one of the edgehogs. You can see that the pieced border mushrooms are very flat but the applique mushrooms have some depth.

Another closeup of one hedgehog with the background and such, therei is a lot of straight-line hand quilting

This is actually the back of the hedgehog quilt vs. the otter quilt! I thought

An undersea fabric print with vibrant fish on a vibrant background at the top and bottom as mirror-imsages of each other and an open blue bubbly part in the center.
