Summer is dawning, 250 celebrations are coming to an end, and the youth are gearing up to head back to school. 

From top to bottom, August is filled with events encouraging neighbors to connect, as well as plenty of events aimed at supporting families in starting the school year off successfully.

The Germantown Info Hub has compiled a list of free and low-cost events this month for neighbors to look out for.

In Germantown

August 1: Attic Brewing Co. hosts a summer market in its Beer Garden at its home base (137 Berkley St.) from 4–9:00 p.m. It features a diverse range of local vendors.

August 1: Queer Game Night returns to Young American Hard Cider (6350 Germantown Ave.) from 7–9 p.m. for a summer patio edition hosted by Curator Chan for $10. Enjoy music, drinks, bites, and classic games like UNO, cards, and Mancala, with room to bring your own games, friends, or just yourself. Tickets here.

August 4: The 4th Annual 39th District and Friends of Fernhill Park National Night Out will run from 2–8 p.m. at Fernhill Park, Wissahickon, and Roberts Avenues. Enjoy free food, a fire truck display, a kickball tournament, face painting, line dancing, live music by DJ Jus, raffles, and more. Limited parking is available.

August 8: G-Town Radio will host the opening reception for All Roads Lead Back to G-Town Radio from 6–9 p.m. at 24 Maplewood Mall. The window installation launches Tieshka K. Smith’s four-month #10YearsOfRacismIsASickness residency, revisiting the original project through photography, mapping, memory, and community dialogue.

August 8: Join Philadelphia Parks and Rec for a volunteer cleanup at Fernhill Park from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Bring good energy, and they’ll provide the tools. You can register through the QR code or link on the event page.

August 8: Second Saturday: G-town Gatherings brings neighbors and visitors together at Johnson House from 12–4 p.m. with live music, food trucks, and local vendors. Hosted by Germantown United CDC and Historic Germantown, it’s a community-centered way to spend the afternoon in Germantown.

August 8: Love Portal will host a free Germantown Block Party from 4 to 9 p.m. at Maplewood Mall. The event will feature DJs and live performances from Oluwafemi, DJ Massiah, Damiana and Nah Mean?, along with food, local vendors and more.

August 14: Work Successphilly offers one-on-one time with a human resources professional at  Joseph E. Coleman Library (68 W. Chelten Ave.) from 1–3 p.m. Hosted by Neighborhood Community Action Center 8 (NCAC8), it’s a monthly event with additional dates running through December. If you miss this one, the following is September 1 at the same time.

August 15: EcoFest Block Party at The Water Shed celebrates sustainability, creativity, and Germantown pride with hands-on activities, art-making, food trucks, a DJ, and community vendors. The free family-friendly event runs from 12–6 p.m. at 5300 Wayne Avenue. RSVP here.

August 15: The 6th Annual HOG Philly Community Block Party takes over 5245 Germantown Ave from 12–3 p.m. with free food pantry items, fresh produce, clothing, school supplies, music, and family fun. Hosted by House of Glory Philadelphia, it’s a free community celebration with health and wellness resources too. RSVP here.

August 15: Community Wellness Health Fair at Lonnie Young Rec Center runs from 1–5 p.m. and is free and open to all ages and genders. August 16: First United Methodist Church of Germantown will host a Back-to-School End-of-Summer Event from 2–4 p.m. at 6001 Germantown Ave. Families can enjoy free school supplies, food, water, ice, music, prizes, and more. For more info, visit FUMCOG.org.

August 18: Neighborhood Community Action Center: Water Department at the Coleman Library offers drop-in office hours from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Representatives from the Philadelphia Water Department can help with water service, billing questions, meter appointments, service issues, and assistance with water bills.

August 19: Join State Rep. Andre D. Carroll, in partnership with the Philly Fire Dept. and Center in the Park, at 12 p.m. at Center in the Park (5818 Germantown Ave.) for a fire preparedness event with community partners and service providers. August 20: Street Movies! returns to Vernon Park on Thursday, August 20, with a free, family-friendly outdoor screening hosted by Scribe Video Center, Friends of Vernon Park, and Germantown Info Hub. This year’s Germantown lineup features short films on hyperlocal history, Philly rumba, public memory, and Black love. Read more here.

August 22: The Colored Girls Museum will present Keepers of a Movement, a conversation with Black art collectors and Dr. Myrah Brown-Green, author of the book of the same name. The event begins at 3 p.m. at Ubuntu Fine Art Gallery, 5423 Germantown Ave.

August 22: Sweet Juice Fest 2026 brings artists, musicians, healers, and dreamers together at The Farm at Awbury Arboretum (6336 Ardleigh St.) from 2:30–9:30 p.m. Tickets start at a suggested minimum price of $10, with proceeds supporting the artists, the venue, and the guest experience. Kiddos under five attend free of charge.

August 22: Germantown Unity Day will honor boxing champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and recognize Derrick ‘Bozy’ Ennis at Freedom Square Shopping Center, 5825 Germantown Ave. The celebration will include the announcement of “Ennis Way,” with a parade beginning at noon, food and refreshments, and vending opportunities. August 22: Join KIDZ In Da Hood from 12–3 p.m. for a fun and engaging afternoon designed for kids to learn, play, and grow. The event will feature game, sensory, gross motor, art, and conversation stations, with activities focused on creativity, movement, teamwork, and positive connections. All kids are welcome. It happens at 6353 Germantown Ave.

August 23: The Wild Indigo Poetry Series returns at 5 p.m., featuring local poetry organizers CJ of Spoken Word, KP Brown, Phil Dykhouse, Khalisa Hameed, and LindoYes!, with music by Miles Orion Butler. Co-founded by Sarah Browning and Raina León, the monthly series highlights poetry rooted in social justice, community transformation, and local creative voices. $5 suggested donation. August 23: Join Danny’s House for a free community event from 1–4 p.m. at 43–45 W. Upsal St. Bring the family for food, refreshments, and a chance to learn about Danny’s House, a sober living resource for women in the neighborhood. Hot dogs, water, brownies, freeze pops, juice, and cookies will be available. Donations are welcome and appreciated.

August 29: Saint Harmony Cafe will host Community Cafe Live from 1–6 p.m. The “Sip, Gather, Grow” event will feature floral décor, fresh bites, live performances, local food trucks, and a community tea talk at 3 p.m. Registration includes reserved seating, handcrafted beverages, and a tea-party treat buffet. Tea-party attire is encouraged, and the event is a pay-what-you-wish fundraiser. Get your tickets here; tickets are donation-based.

Near Germantown

August 7–8: Nicetown CDC will host its 24th Annual Give Back Festival at Nicetown Park, on the 4300 block of Germantown Ave. The two-day community celebration will feature live music, food trucks, children’s activities, health and wellness resources, local vendors, giveaways, and more. August 14: The Philly Kroc Center will host a Back-to-School Backpack Event from 4–7 p.m. at 4200 Wissahickon Avenue. Families can receive free backpacks and school supplies while supplies last, along with family-friendly activities. Questions can be sent to veda.brown@use.salvationarmy.org.
