The title of this book says it all: Christine O'Donnell is indeed a "troublemaker." But she wears that title as a badge of honor, because it means she opposes the mainstream Republican Party and the mainstream media. Both those establishment groups hate troublemakers and hence hate Christine O'Donnell. Which is exactly why we at OnTheIssues love her.
Ms. O'Donnell was widely ridiculed by mainstream Republicans and the mainstream media in her 2010 Delaware Senate bid. The establishment said all sorts of ridiculous things, mostly about O'Donnell being a witch and about O'Donnell being inexperienced. But what they really meant was, "She is a troublemaker who will not listen to the mainstream establishment."
OnTheIssues loves candidates who will not listen to the mainstream establishment. We consider them the cornerstone of democracy. America was founded by troublemakers who went against the establishment of the British King. The Republican Party was founded by troublemakers who went against the establishment two-party system of their day. Every major political movement in our history -- from women's suffrage to civil rights to gay rights -- was founded by troublemakers and populated by troublemakers. We need troublemakers whenever we need to fight the establishment. And we always need to fight the establishment, if we want America to be America.
It doesn't matter if you agree with O'Donnell's issue stances or not. Readers of my other book reviews will be aware that I disagree with just about every one of O'Donnell's policy prescriptions. The relevant aspect is that O'Donnell honestly describes her issue stances -- including in this book -- and cares enough about them to put herself "in the arena." (Richard Nixon popularized the term In the Arena, meaning "running for political office and hence making yourself a target.") The mainstream media sit outside the arena and scoff at how poorly O'Donnell ran her campaign -- neglecting the fact that she did win the GOP primary against a former Delaware governor -- because they can ONLY sit outside the arena -- they dare not ENTER the arena, as O'Donnell has done.
O'Donnell refused to play the mainstream GOP's game, and beat the establishment GOP candidate in the GOP primary anyway. She then lost to an establishment Democratic candidate in the general election -- which was unsurprising since she had to spend all of her TV time answering idiotic media questions about whether she was a witch. Sen. Coons (D, DE) is now up for re-election in 2014 -- we review this book now in the hopes that O'Donnell will run again. She may do so if she gets support from the American people (she started a PAC, ChristinePAC, for the explicit purpose of fighting character assassination by the press) -- we know she won't get support from the Republican Party nor the mainstream media!
