Opening a Maintenance Window
Or, a relaxing way to spend Friday evenings
To keep things humming smoothly in the omg.lol datacenter, I’m going to begin performing more routine weekly maintenance on our servers and infrastructure. This will be a vast improvement over omg.lol’s current maintenance process, which is something between “eh, this can probably stay on that version for a little longer” and “I don’t see any smoke, so it can’t be all that bad.”
The bulk of the activity during this window will be boring and invisible—you’ll likely never even notice that anything is happening at all. There might also be the occasional service restart, which would only cause a very brief disruption.
The window starts at 11 PM Eastern time each Friday (which is 3 AM UTC during daylight saving time and 4 AM UTC otherwise, until someone finally decides that we can stop with the weird biannual time changes) and lasts for three hours. Minor updates and improvements will be made during this time; more major things that carry a higher risk for downtime or disruption will be announced on Mastodon and posted to status.neatnik.net in advance.
That’s pretty much it. I’m taking care of the servers and software like a grown-up. And now, back to work!
