Brush Settings

people ask me about these a lot so i'm posting them all... i draw in clip studio paint--i don't create brushes myself, i just adjust from existing ones, usually based on the defaults that come with the program. i exported all my tool settings though, so you can download them here.

⬇️download: nami-brushsettings.zip (17KB)

and some others you can get from the clip studio asset store (free dl)

to learn how to import brushes, check clip studio's FAQ.

NOTE: using specific brush settings is not going to make your art magically better!!! everyone draws differently, so if these don't feel comfortable to use, you shouldn't try to conform yourself to them. please adjust as you see fit, and remember not to strain your hands too much. don't press too hard! draw with your whole arm and not just your wrist! and most importantly, have fun out there!!!

Pixel Brushes

BAD END THEATER brush example

for stuff like BAD END THEATER i use a regular aliased brush with pressure sensitivity turned on. 6px-8px is a good size (i like thicker lines), then you can export at 2-300% with nearest neighbor scaling. for game assets i usually just scale it in-engine, which saves a lot on filesize!

here it is at original res:

i also just really like to draw with simple-as-possible fixed weight pixel lines...

3px pixel brush example

that's 3px line weight with pressure sensitivity off. i use it for all my doodle comics!

with these brushes you can fill in your colors on the same layer OR do it on separate ones... since you can magic wand a single value and have it select either connected/unconnected pixels, it's easy to add shading on the same layer without messing with the lines. for BET's art i just did everything on one layer since that was the fastest way to work, it made adjusting things less of a hassle since i didn't have to adjust extra layers after changing the lines, i could just draw right over...

Pixel Dither Tool

illustrations from night with timber

did you know you can make ANY BRUSH into a pixel brush!?!??! using this pixel dither tool!!!!!!!! i really love the way it makes gradients look!!!!! kinda like drawing in aseprite without having to adjust to a different program...!

Night with Timber's art is drawn using this, the mechanical pencil brush for lines, and moya (found below) for the background gradients... setting up the layers for coloring is a little bit of a hassle (since you can't do it all on one), and if you have multiple line colors you either need to color over the clipping layer or make a second dither folder, which really adds up if you're making a lot of them in one file...

btw this is what it looks like unfiltered:

pixel dither tool unfiltered

messy!!! weirdly soft... kinda uncanny lol. but i like doing lines this way because i can transform-tool anything that looks wrong without ruining the pixel-line quality. doesn't matter how it looks unfiltered since you never see it that way! (until i show u like rn haha)

Watercolor

moya brish example

the lines on this are just a default brush, so ignoring those... the brush i used for coloring this was posted on twitter by my favorite artist, takehito harada! like... 10 years ago or something!!!!!! so sorry i don't have a link to the original post!!!!!!! i don't remember if it had a proper name, but he said もやもや (hazy/foggy), so i've just been calling it moya.

since it's a semi-transparent brush, drawing with it is kind of a hassle. what i usually like to do is fill in flat colors and just shade on a clipping layer with it... otherwise it's hard to go back and fill in whatever gaps you missed if you're adjusting stuff.

here's a doodle from this morning:

grayscale timber doodle

i like how soft it looks but i end up wanting to go over it a bunch to try to make the fills fit the lines better... like i said, it's a hassle!!! but it looks nice with textured pencil lines, like this:

an old moxie drawing

(i don't have the line brush from this drawing anymore, it was the colored pencil default but it seems to have changed in modern clip, so... oh well)

Charcoal

charcoal brush example

did i download these specifically for return to ash...? the charcoal ones i definitely did, but mameo i might've grabbed before then... i REALLY like the mameo brush because you can do messy or clean lines with it and the texture looks great either way.

i enjoyed using vine charcoal when i took life drawing classes, so it was exciting to find a digital version. the brush lags quite a bit when you're drawing on a huge canvas (this game's art assets were drawn in 4k) but if you keep it a reasonable size it's nice and smooth.

pro tip: you can draw with transparency by clicking the checkered block underneath the fg/bg color. i typically use that instead of an eraser tool when working with textured brushes like these.

Mechanical Pencil

mechanical pencil brush example

the lines for this are made with the default mechanical pencil brush. i've been told they added a texture to the current default one though, so idk, you can just disable that or download my version... i use this brush for the character art in Syrup 2.

i like that the lines are SLIGHTLY transparent depending on the pen pressure, but it can make me kind of a perfectionist trying to get it to look consistent... i have my bucket tool set to non-aliased edges, which can show up as all jagged underneath the lines if they're not thick enough, which makes me then go back in with another pen to clean it up...

WHAT A PAIN!!! it's more fun to use for rough sketches/thumbnails, which is probably what i use it for most often.

pastille doodles

it's nice and thin, which lets me draw more details than with my other rough brushes. also it just looks cute overall, especially with simple colors like this. if i use it too often, i start to crave thicker lines though...

Darker Pencil

darker pencil brush example

another semi-transparent brush that actually works great for lineart. i use it for lonely wolf treat! usually i'll put a soft gradient as a clipping layer over the lines, since it looks better than leaving them solid black... (if the lines are thin enough it doesn't really matter tho...)

ingame size:

i use this one for a lot of rough sketches too, when i need to prevent myself from making something too detailed. it's quick to block in fills. i like to draw on a huge canvas with size 25px or so and scale down 50% like this:

quick timber doodle

it can kinda be TOO messy though, so i stopped using it for random doodles i might want to post in favor of the pixel brush (especially since i now take image size/loading time into considerartion when posting to my site!)

Pen

candy brush example

this is just default turnip pen... i named it candy because i used it for another piece of candy for a long time (and now i'm using it again!)

this is my go-to brush for anything that needs clean lines that i don't want to fuss with too much. Starry Flowers, Charm Studies, Astra's Garden, Puppergeist... it's just super easy to work with... i don't have to think very hard when i draw with it, and i like the result. i don't want to use it for everything or else my art would look the same all the time, but it is my fallback brush when i just want something to straightforwardly look good in my style haha.

like mirror call (nsfw)... looks great....... you should read it if you're interested.......... thanks!!!!!!
