Newton Road United Reformed (Allen Memorial) Church closed on Christmas Day 2017 after 100 years of witness in the Newton area of Great Barr, on the borders of Birmingham, Sandwell and Walsall.

The Elders asked David J. A. Hallam to write their history, who introduces the book in this short video.

The book is available to download as a Kindle Book.  Paper copies will also be available to loan from Great Barr and Hamstead  public libraries.

The archives of Newton Road URC are to be deposited at the Sandwell Community History Centre where they will provide an important source for local, family and church historians.

David Hallam had previously written the story of Elizabeth Asbury, the mother of  Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury who lived in the cottage almost opposite the church. Mrs Asbury hosted the predecessor congregation that  built the first chapel used by the revived congregationalist cause  in 1917. David was recently awarded a Master of Arts in West Midlands History from the University of Birmingham.
