FUKUI - Residents in Fukui Prefecture began clearing flood-damaged homes early on August 31 as temperatures climbed sharply following record rainfall, prompting authorities to issue a heatstroke alert while recovery work continued in severe heat.
Streets in affected areas were lined with furniture and other belongings removed from flooded homes as residents worked quickly from early morning to clean up the damage.
People drained water that had flowed into their houses and carried out broken furniture and other damaged items.
One resident said, "It feels like you just wonder when we'll ever finish cleaning everything up."
Emergency safety orders and evacuation instructions issued in Fukui Prefecture because of the heavy rain had all been lifted by 9 a.m. on August 31.
In neighboring Ishikawa Prefecture, widespread flooding continued around the Ouchigata lagoon area in Hakui following heavy rain that began on August 27.
Pump trucks were being used again on the morning of August 31 to drain water from the inundated area.
Temperatures in both Ishikawa and Fukui are forecast to exceed 35 degrees Celsius on September 1, leaving residents and workers to continue recovery efforts under dangerously hot conditions.
