A mutation is a term used in several areas of mathematics for a prescribed local transformation that produces a new object of the same general type. In knot theory, a knot mutation cuts out and rotates or reflects a tangle before regluing it. In the theory of cluster algebras, a seed mutation replaces one cluster variable and transforms the associated matrix.
