This is a page updated sporadically on what I am up to, what I am looking forward to, and anything I might be struggling with.
films: Turtles Can Fly was very powerful. It rightfully re-invigorated my anger of war and the impact it has on children. I feel lucky to be able to expose myself to challenging cinema. Watched this with A which also highlighted how important it is to talk about films because you get other perspectives that are otherwise missed (e.g. the aspect of hope that I missed!).
books: I read two graphic novels. The Waiting. An account of the Korean war from the POV of a mother and a child. Hearbreaking. I picked this up just for the title: I Ate the Whole World to Find You. Stunning sets of very dark stories. The last story on what birth means to a mother was quite moving.
plays: Absolutely floored and amazed by First Do No Harm. It's been a long time since I have been so engaged with a play which caused so many discussions with friends. I felt my spark of analysing texts come back after this play. It definitely shocked me (in the best way) :D
music/gigs: I wrote about Deafheaven and the King St Crawl here. Heavy music + tender music = <3. I saw claire rousay last night after a recent discovery. This is SO my style of music (TIL about Musique concrète), I feel glad I discovered her.
struggling with: Hearbreak... but more so, accepting what I need to improve about myself now that I have seen myself in the mirror through the eyes of another.
recent wins: I did my first cyanotype print (postcard-sized)! Did two crafty projects for birthday gifts. I recorded some videos for gigs I went to and shared them online.
excited about: I am thinking of writing more and presenting my poetry next month at an open mic of similar. A bit nervous about it but I really want to make it happen this time.
trying to learn: Catching myself when I am not feeling my feelings and trying to just analyse them and think about them. I've been doing this by just breathing a bit more intentionally when I feel like I need to feel them. Seperate myself from the screen, close my eyes, and just try to understand how it moves from my head to my body. Also trying to not be as performative and be myself more.
