So I follow N. D. Stevenson (comics writer and animator, most famous for Nimona and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) and his husband Lee Ostertag (also a comics writer and animator) on Instagram. When I started following them, they were both publicly presenting as women, and then a few years ago N. D. came out as transmasc nonbinary, and then earlier this year Lee also came out as transmasc. Anyway this is all setup to say that Lee had the chance to make the funniest post of all time and he took it:

like. i think trying to assert that hadestown definitively takes place in a literal time loop takes away from the ambiguity that makes the story work and also ignores the role of the audience and the way the story of orpheus & eurydice is used as a stand-in for all stories this is a work of metaphor and interpreting it too literally strips it of its meaning BUT it can be fun to play in the space of story-as-literal-time-loop wherein the characters are trapped repeating the same events and only hermes as the narrator is aware of that hadestown hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice eurydice orpheus broadway musicals musical

There’s a bit in this fic where I’m just transcribing some of Gale’s canon dialogue, and Google Docs is SEETHING. They HATE to see his fun and vaguely archaic vocal flourishes coming. They see the whimsy in his heart and they want him dead for it.
