DEATH OF HILARY MARTIN DANIEL 1931 TO 2026

Our President Hilary Daniel died on 28 March, aged 95, after a long illness.

A meeting at Hilary’s house in the summer of 1958 led to the formation of the Frome Society later that year.   Hilary was our first Secretary, later served as Chair, and was elected President five years ago.  He was an active and engaged member of our Society, instrumental in making it what it is today.

Hilary also contributed to Frome life in many other ways.  He was a solicitor in the local law firm Daniel and Cruttwell, following in the footsteps of his father, Alfred, who was a partner there.

He was also a loyal supporter of Frome Drama Club, Frome Rotary, and numerous other local organisations and charities.

We are sure that many of our members have fond memories of Hilary over the years.

A celebration of his life was held at Berkeley Church on Friday 1 May 2026.

Frome Society: Review of Constitution
Why is change needed?
Our existing constitution has proved problematic for two main reasons:

It did not allow us to deal with a change of officers mid-year in 2025.  It does not allow for an online ballot and required a Special General Meeting for the membership to agree changes in a legal way.  This is cumbersome.

The current governance structure does not encourage potential volunteers.
We are therefore proposing changes to the Constitution to allow the Society to work more smoothly.
