Etymology

[edit]

Continuing a Common Albanian compound *ajó, from Proto-Albanian *au̯ + *hā́, continuing Proto-Indo-European *h₂au̯ (away, from) and Proto-Indo-European *sáh₂ (that). The second component, from Common Albanian *jó, is identical to the Albanian postponed definite article -a, which changed due to contact with final in feminine words. (e.g. vajza, gruaja, makina, shtëpia).[1] More at ai.
