Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sʰaːɡs, *sʰaːɡ): semantic (metal) + phonetic (OC *sjaːɡ) – grindstone.

Etymology

[edit]
"whetstone, grindstone"
From (OC *sʰlaːl, “to rub; to polish”) + suffix -k (Schuessler, 2007). Related to (OC *sʰaːɡs, *sʰaːɡ).
"criss-cross, interlocking, alternating, ornate"
Related to (OC *sʰaːɡs), (OC *zaːɡs) and (OC *zaːɡs). Perhaps semantically extended to "mistake" (Schuessler, 2007). Though not noted by Schuessler, note phonetic and semantic similarities to Burmese ဆက် (hcak, to join, connect).
"lake"
Borrowed from Tibetan མཚོ (mtsho, lake).
"cerium"
Borrowed from English cerium.

Pronunciation 1

[edit]

Note:
  • cuòr - “error; mistake; fault”.
Note:
  • chó̤ - vernacular;
  • cháuk - literary.
