very cool @Graham87: to see this! i looked at Decimal separator now. how happy is eloquence with the following numbers? this one is with gaps: 1234444.2451, this one with american style: 1,234,444.245,1, 3 further examples using international varieties: recent german, 1.234.444,245.1, arabic separators: 1٬234٬444.245٬1 (UTF-8 taken from here: https://www.compart.com/en/unicode/U+066C), old german handwriting: 1'234'444,245'1, using quote as the arabic separator is difficult to type, especially with currencies alo written with dot, 1'234'444.245'1 (this prevailed in switzerland, and many programming languages). modern programming languages like kotlin also allow 1_234_444.245_1. i never used long numbers after the comma, so wrote it the first time now with separators. @Graham87:, much appreciated! we covered all variants i could extract from the Decimal separator page, no more testing :) the comma at the end of the numbers was separating the three pieces of information in the sentence. i constructed the sentence so that the numbers were followed by commas to have feedback from your side how it turns out. did it read "one million two hundred thirtyfour thousand four hundred fourty four comma two four five one comma pause three further examples" in that case, or commas after numbers confuse the reading? a last question i d have as well. out of the two working for you, why you prefer the american style to gaps? It read it the 1,234,444.245 bit normally then paused before reading the 1 and 3. I prefer what you call the American style because this is the English Wikipedia and it's used by the vast majority of English-speaking people (in the UK and most Commonwealth countries, except sometimes in South Africa). So it turns out sometimes the val/gaps templates actually *do* fail with my screen reader/browser (see Template talk:Val#Screen reader problems with digits grouped by spaces in this template). And yes, I think markup should be simpler where possible. Graham87 (talk) 09:37, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

i tried now with Orca (assistive technology) on gnome linux. it can only read comma as thousands separator, and none of the internationals. English-speaking_world#English_as_a_global_language means that many people speak and write english, but use all kinds of localization, including number format. Upper/lower house

You seem to have misunderstood something about these terms while editing U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate—whatever it is, please be aware these terms are correct going forward, and your odd replacement with "bicameral" was quite clearly not—the House and Senate are not themselves divided in two. oh, really? i understand what you mean, and i believe you are absolutely right. despite, the naming i think is wrong at the moment. i was looking for the correct terms in english, but was not as successful as i wished to be. let me try to explain, maybe you are better here. there are two roots of modern democracies, influencing the houses of a parliament as well. if the root is monarchy, they have this concept of "lord" and "peasant" ingraned, to overstate it a little, sometimes they call it upper and lower house, for the upper class and lower class. in german it was "herrenhaus" for the house of lords.

if the root is revolutionary, calling some people "upper" and the others "lower" does not go down well. italy, or the rome republic has such roots, revolutionary france, switzerland, USA, most communist states. revolutions normally made sure there is no king, no emperor, and - no king replacement like a president. they have a council, a presidium, a directorate, i.e. some group of people instead for the executive power. that egalitarian root also transcendet into the organisation of the parliament. as history showed getting legislation right is not so easy. most had one chamber parliaments, some progressed into a 2 chamber parliament. the most successful way of organizing 2 chambers proved to be the usa - switzerland - sowiet union style of federation: one chamber representing people, the other representing member states. both chambers equal rights in law making. not sure how this is called in english. i found "perfect bicameral" for it. if there is still some difference in power, i read "imperfect bicameral". USA for example has slight differences in power, house responsible for president, senate responsible for vice president, so would be imperfect.

to summarize, i think the terms currently in the table are wrong. do we classify the houses, and if, how? one is in terms of "power for legislation", the other is "how members are elected". in UK it really is "lord" or "upper" or "class representation". in USA, switzerland, soviet union it is "state representation" and "people representation". in USA or switzerland there are real elections, in germany it is selected by the states. in soviet union it was elected but to become a candidate for the election was restricted. so i was looking for "chamber of bicameral parliament" or "chamber" or similar to avoid all of this ... but it did not exist in the list of allowed values. so i went with "bicameral". like in switzerland, if you call ständerat, the council of states, comparable to US senate, "upper house" they would put you in a mad house. while mad house is house as well and one can be member, that is not a house of parliament :) what would be your suggestion? Why are you modifying the formatting of numbers?

Hi, in several recent edits you've modified the formatting of large numbers. For example, changing 1,234 to 1234 or even to {{gaps|1|234}}.

Why have you been making changes like this?

These contravene MOS:DIGITS, and make these articles difficult to read for most native speakers of English, who are used to commas as thousands separators in most contexts.

hi moxfyre, nice to meet you here! i have a blind colleague who uses screen readers in german and english. having 10,000, 10.000, and 10'000 depending on the region may be quite confusing for screen readers. 10000 is not confusing, but difficult for the eyes. gaps work, as it is no character but a visual space on the website, and screen readers see 10000. the disadvantage is for the editor, typing in that format.

the number format is actually a country specific setting, and not a language specific one. for example, switzerland follows arab or indian tradition, writing it 10'000, and compromising on 10000, just like most other countries. mediawiki software up to now has no really elegant way of following country specifics, like standard c library for programming languages e.g. on linux. many of these libraries are not fully complete, having a couple of edge cases. so i hope gaps do not cause too much trouble? --ThurnerRupert (talk) 19:32, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

Came here to say the same as @Moxfyre. It is my understanding that most English speaking countries (which is who we cater to on English Wikipedia) use commas as thousands separators. The adding of gaps does cause trouble as it makes articles more difficult to read as they are not used to seeing numerals presented in that way. We generally only use gaps when there's a very compelling reason to do so.

Furthermore, I see you're often abbreviating to unit symbols. Please note that in prose, unit names should be given in full, except when a unit (especially one with a long name) is used repeatedly, but only after spelling out the first use. Where space is limited (such as tables, infoboxes, parenthetical notes, and mathematical formulas) unit symbols are okay. RickyCourtney (talk) 23:10, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

hey @RickyCourtney, thank you for all the contributions you made over such a long period of time! given that 140 countries have mandatory english training, you might underestimate the reach of english wikipedia. 40% of enwp edits seem to be from USA, 40% from not-native english speakers. english langauge is spoken by 1.5bn non native vs 400mn native. i did not find a split of wikipedia readers along native or not. gaps as thousand separator is quite widely used. SI standardized on it, the international bureau of weights and measures (bipm) recommends it since 1948, reaffirmed in 2003, as well the international union of pure and applied chemistry (iupac), the american medical association's AMA manual of style, and the UK metrication board. therefor maybe 2 bn people follow it. one point is important though. i do not like typing gaps when writing an article, and understand everybody refusing to type its wikipedia format. it is painful.

i personally do not read wikipedia any more, because it is easy to tell claude or chatgpt "please use swiss number format, metric" and it nicely does it, properly abbreviated units. i should not use a LLM to do this though, wikipedia should do it for me. but i am in no position to decide what they spend their 100 mn yearly income on :) maybe i create a ticket for it. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 12:08, 7 April 2026 (UTC)

If you’d like to create a ticket that better localizes number formatting, please do so. However, until that happens I ask that you stop overriding the default behavior of this template to reflect this format unless there's a very compelling reason to do so on that specific article.

I also want to say, I hear your arguments, especially about non-native speakers (I’m well aware of the concept of English as a lingua franca, and the privilege that provides us native English speakers). However, there are several different ways to format numbers. None are the right solution. But for native English speakers, many of whom don’t speak another language, the gaps in numbers makes articles more difficult to comprehend. RickyCourtney (talk) 15:13, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
