Wordiness

definition wordiness is a measure of the density of information in a text; high wordiness corresponds to low information density

definition a vague word has many different meanings, is open to interpretation

definition an ambiguous word has a few distinct different meanings

definition a generic word is not specific enough but doesn't cause vagueness

high wordiness can "cover-up" for a lack of information and analysis --- Gefen. it is to be avoided in technical writing

wordiness can manifest in several ways, often through the use of:

  • vague, ambiguous, generic words and rhetorical questions
  • it is [...] who and there is [...] that and similar constructions
  • , and this and similar constructions
  • in order to and in the process of and similar constructions

examples

  • there are 70 participants who completed the survey can be rewritten as 70 participants completed the survey
  • we will have a discussion can be rewritten as we will discuss
  • Albert Einstein was a scientist who revolutionized our understanding of time can be rewritten as Albert Einstein revolutionized our understanding of time
  • internet addiction is enabled by several factors. These factors include [...] can be rewritten as internet addiction is enabled by several factors, including [...]
