Ben's story

I built DuckType after I had RSI.

Later, after surgery on my median nerve, I could not lift even a loaf of bread. I could still use my computer, but my fingers were numb and I kept missing keys. DuckType helped me keep working, and I did not want my page contents sent over the internet just so I could dictate.

It is not just for surgery recovery. It is for any time typing is slower than speaking.

Why I built my own

I wanted dictation that did not need to read my screen.

Sometimes typing is the slow part

Pain, fatigue, travel, or long meetings can make typing slower than speaking. DuckType inserts the result where your cursor is.

Raw dictation needs cleanup

Most speech needs edits before you send it. DuckType cleans it up before pasting.

No recorder joins your call

Record microphone and system audio from your computer. The meeting stays normal.

Your notes stay as files

Meeting notes and dictated text are Markdown files you can open outside DuckType.

DuckType writes where your cursor is

Dictate into any app. Record meetings. Keep the files.

Use one desktop app to dictate, record calls, clean up transcripts, and save Markdown notes.

1.

Dictate where you are typing

Press a shortcut, speak, and DuckType inserts cleaned-up text where your cursor is.

No screenshots, messages, or open documents uploaded

DuckType records audio. It does not upload screenshots, browser tabs, messages, documents, or what you have open.

Local files first

Recordings and notes can live in ordinary folders you control.

Use local models or your own API key

Use local models or your own API key when you want unlimited transcription without DuckType-hosted AI.

Markdown files you can keep

Keep the text from recordings and edited notes in formats that other tools can read.

A note from the creator

So I just built one myself.

I've been building software for years (pre-AI), and I noticed other products didn't meet my expectations.

I hope you like it.

Creator, DuckType

What I tried first

  • Built-in dictationFree

    Wasn't good enough.

  • VC-backed AI appsPaid

    Too expensive, and invasive.

  • Open source dictation appsFree

Wasn't good enough. Often doesn't use the more accurate, proprietary cloud models.

The alternatives

They grow at all costs.

Some applications have a privacy mode switch, but it didn't do anything until a security researcher reported it. That was not the only thing I found.

Credentials in a leaked file

They leaked an implement-api.md file containing database connection strings, including credentials. That exposed the conversations of their users, which they had captured in the first place.

Your screen sent to their servers

They track their users invasively by sending your screen contents to their servers.

Bans for raising privacy issues

They ban users on forums for raising privacy issues.

Your own notes behind a paywall

They keep your data (meeting notes and summaries) behind a paywall.

As AI becomes part of more conversations, companies are aiming to turn your usage into training data, data moats, and their startup valuation. Your screen and voice should not be saved in their database.

Ready when typing is not

Write without doing all the typing.

Download DuckType for private dictation, bot-free meeting recording, and notes you can keep.
