Spaced Linux is a desktop Linux distribution based on Devuan's "Unstable" branch and featuring the MATE desktop environment on top of the Compiz compositing window manager. Like its parent, it uses the SysV init system. The distribution boots into a barebones live environment which offers the possibility to install Spaced Linux to a hard disk using the Calamares system installer. Once installed, a Welcome screen provides single-click options to extend the distribution by installing a collection of suggested applications (for web, office and multimedia use), adding SpacedBazaar (for Flatpak applications) or installing the NVIDIA graphics drivers. Spaced Linux intends to be modular, transparent and free of systemd, accessible to both beginners and advanced Linux users.

 Best, fastest OS I've ever used.

Devuan is such a clean base, and the compiz desktop is awesome!

The apps that get installed in the welcome screen are a good selection of apps I think most people will find useful.

I'm so glad I don't have to go back to Linux Mint!

The boot time is particularly impressive. Whoever said you need systemd to boot fast has no idea what they're talking about.

The theming is a really nice touch. The new grub as of 8.26.7 looks really great. It's wonderful to be able to switch to a Windows theme, a Mac theme, or Android at the touch of a button. And the theme switching is FAST!

 You could say this is like the "GOAT" of a distro/blend.

I've been following the development for a while, and it's always refreshing seeing someone care this much about open source in general, or a project specifically.

MATE isn't necessarily my favorite, but 10/10 for the effort, updates, maintenance, and enthusiasm of the creator. That passion really shows, and it's great to see a project being actively cared for rather than simply left to coast.

There's clearly a lot of thought and personality put into this project, and that alone makes it stand out. Even if MATE isn't my personal first choice, I can absolutely appreciate the consistency and dedication behind it. It's the kind of project that reminds you why the Linux community is so cool in the first place.
