Rows 67 and 72 are in Conditions 1 and 2 respectively. CalcChain suggests they were moved by hand from current rows 17 and 18, which are in Condition 0 (the control condition).

Rows 17 and 18, in turn, have participant ids #50 and #53, perfectly bracketing the two IDs that were moved (#51 and #52).

This one is a bit harder to read.

It would seem that row 69 used to be between rows 7 and row 34. But, look at that i=’2′ in E7. It means that that observation is in another sheet, sheet #2, which contains summary statistics. What we do know is that Row 69 used to be right before Row 34, and so it was in Row 33.

If we look at what is row 33 is now, it is the only observation in the control condition that is out of sequence. This suggests that the observations may have been swapped, perhaps to maintain a balanced number of observations.

This row has ID# 91 and appears as Condition 2. It was moved by hand from between rows 99 and 100, which have ID#s 90 and #92. So, while it matches the logic discussed above, out-of-sequence rows were moved by hand from an original position where they were in-sequence: It was moved from Condition 2 to Condition 2. This is a manual alteration of the spreadsheet that did not alter the results of the study. It may have been a mistake by the data tamperer, it may have been an incidental move, or we may not be fully understanding what calcChain is telling us.

Finally, to address possible concerns that we may be cherrypicking calcChain, it is worth noting that while we surely cannot account for every one of the many odd patterns in this calcChain file, it does contain large portions of in-sequence calculations interrupted only by the cases discussed above (see the screenshots below). The anomalies with subject IDs do generally match the anomalies with calcChain sequences, even if the latter are more abundant.

Our policy is to solicit feedback from authors whose work discuss. We did not do so this time, given (1) the nature of the post, (2) that the claims made here were presumably vetted by Harvard University, (3) that the articles we cast doubt on have already had retraction requests issued, and (4) that  discussions of these issues were already surfacing on social media and by some science journalists, without their having these facts, making a traditional multi-week back-and-forth with authors self-defeating.
