OVERVIEW
Straying further from Contra’s formula and reflecting the complete disdain for their own franchises, Konami’s latest installment comprises a twin stick shooter whose principal tie to the series is from its title. Contra: Rogue Corps is seen by many as Konami’s attempt to cash in on the immeasurable popularity of the game Fortnite.
The game retcons the series timeline beyond what was presented in the Contra Anniversary Collection, shifting dates of the events of previous titles even further. There are no returning characters and the ones featured share no connection to any other game in the series. Hungry Beast, the playable panda character is especially a point of contempt by many, alluding to the aforementioned capitalizing on Fortnite’s popularity.
Early impressions from the E3 showcase had already been negative, eliciting little optimism. The sample demo, followed shortly by the full release, did not curb those early impressions. Particular criticism has been aimed at the visuals, with most considering the graphics to be on par to, and even below, games released from more than a decade ago. The gameplay itself bears no practical resemblance to Contra, in addition to faring poorly on its own merits. Many even feel that it is a mobile phone tier game being released on current generation platforms.
In its combination of tedious gameplay mechanics, undesirable controls, mediocre soundtrack and abysmal graphics, Contra: Rogue Corps has proven to be a low-effort cash grab that awards it a spot among the worst in the Contra series. It further reaffirms that Konami’s ownership of their formerly great IPs is only to the detriment of said IPs.
Contra: Rogue Corps can be downloaded on Steam (Windows), the Nintendo Game Store (Switch), PlayStation Store (PlayStation 4) and the Microsoft Store (XBox One).
