The Free Software Foundation (FSF), incorporated in Massachusetts, is a non-profit corporation founded by Richard Stallman on October 04, 1985 1 , to support the free software movement. The FSF holds the copyrights on various pieces and development tools of the GNU operating system.

GNU

GNU refers to an operating system developed by the GNU Project, announced on September 27, 1983, by Stallman at MIT 2 . GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix!” 3 .

License

The GNU General Public License (GPL) and the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) were written for GNU, but are also used by many unrelated projects, also various open source chess engines.
