Everytime I set up a new domain there is always one odd step. Each host I’ve had over the years (I think I’m on my 7th or 8th) has things that make it easier, but none have good forms that map what credential it actually needs. Then there is the odd time where it is just waiting on really slow DNS propagation.

### Cipr and Ciprnode zero

Hello there, posting because I think this could be of common interest around here 🙂

The **Cipr** (Cosmic Index of Public Resources) is a decentralized, distributed, and censorship-resistant web index where domain owners control their own entries. No crawler decides if you are worth indexing. No curator approves your submission. No central authority can delist you. You own a domain, you run a small daemon ―a ciprnode―, you add a DNS TXT record, and your site is in the index, worldwide, in minutes.

**Ciprnode zero** is the first working implementation of a ciprnode, a PoC. It's built on Deno+SQLite, strict Semantic RESTful API (HATEOAS, HAL+JSON, QUERY method...), viral P2P propagation, DNS TXT triple validation, multi-platform single binary. MIT licensed.

Right now the Cipr is an almost empty index, only lists my own stuff, the first three live nodes:

ok, seems not spam. Indiweb has come to terms with the fact that domains are centralized. If this is not a blockchain, then I think it’s interesting

i dont get how domains are centralized

WinnerWind: first is ICAAN, second is domain registrants
#
WinnerWind
i mean every decentralized system is centralized if you look at it hard enough
#
WinnerWind
a true decentralized system just doesnt exist
#
[Murray]
there are P2P sharing networks (e.g. using file drops via Bluetooth and IR) that I'd argue are fully decentralised, but yeah, there's a limit that is reasonable, hence this community (largely) being okay with the level of centralisation around domains
#
WinnerWind
[Murray]: even P2P sharing networks are centralized because they use a shared protocol which is provided by a single source ^_^`
#
[Murray]
eeeh I'd say that's a stretch 😄 but yeah, as you say, its hard to truly "own" every aspect of any system, and trying to do so for purity is likely never going to work well

doesnm: I swear it's not spam! 😁 The DNS system is indeed controlled by a few, seems like the ICANN people have been independent and trustworthy for decades, but that can change in seconds by the actions of any power (governments, big tech...), that's why centralization is inherently problematic, everything depends on the morals/intentions/power of those in charge 🤷🏽‍♂️
#
barriteau
WinnerWind: I agree, seems like some level of centralization is unavoidable. I guess that the best we can do is to opt for "weak" centralization when you can't escape it 😉

barriteau: som elevel of centralization is unfortunately unavoidable. even the indieweb is centralized to DNS, ICANN, underwater cables, etc.

As things scale, particularly where there is required interoperability, centralization is needed. How it is run and how the coordination happens is key.

dns is decentralized if you support alternative roots but not many people do
#
[tantek]
if you have citations of examples/folks doing that, would be worth citing those on the /DNS wiki article

[snarfed]
maybe decentralized in theory, but not in practice, I'm not really aware of any alternate public roots with any real scale, if they even exist at all

(even "in theory" is a stretch)

hey folks! to anyone using hugo SSG, it seems to be generating a newline at the start of the default sitemap.xml which is causing an `XML Parsing Error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity`. I'm still trying to find a fix myself, but thought I'd ask around here if anyone knows how to fix this.

what is hugo?

Hugo is a static site generator written in Go used by several people in the IndieWeb community to run their personal sites https://indieweb.org/hugo

I found a fix. Apparently, this bug was fixed in v0.163.0 but fedora packages only had up until v0.162.1 so I had to just update it manually.

[tantek] thank you for the pointer to the DNS page. I have notes from prior setups and screen captures. The oddity is hosts have different “we’ve made it easy for you” steps and those easy steps change from year to year. Which leaves, which information needs to go where and the forms aren’t clear.
#
[tantek]
[social] agreed that the usability of DNS setup is both poor and unstable. I think documentation of any/all instances of it over time, across providers would be helpful

I don’t know that there are others on my host who are in IndieWeb. They used to be WebFaction and had a few web standards folks and old school bloggers and personal web app services folks. WebFaction was bought by GoDaddy, but for about 2 years GoDaddy left them alone, but in that time most people found new hosts. The founders of WebFactions rebuilt it under a new name and used all the lessons learned in the new build out. But, most people

on it now are OpenSource folks and people who moved off Digital Ocean for small apps with managed virtual host services.

the biggest recent improvement to DNS for indieweb uses is the hosts that now do it automatically, both domain registration and DNS records, which demote those invisible plumbing that users don't have to deal with at all

For the most part I need IP addresses between my Name Server and DNS / site host, then set up where that point for the application piece.
