uucp or nntp or something? With a web frontend? Like dlang forum. We've had experience with discourse as well too.

A good category in the forum would be: "asking for permission". Have an idea that you want to implement? Think it's a bad idea? Ask here for advice or permission (granted with no warranty) to make your bad ideas a reality

dfeed seems bad, opting for just discourse with maybe an nntp bridge

maybe phpbb? :3

i like the idea of phpBB a lot. it keeps the old-school forum setup many miss, while still being updated with features and security fixes in our time (most recent update was april).

we all have different ideas about what a forum should be, and phpBB allows us to each choose our own UI, and has options that fit most people's use cases.

for example, this would work quite well with the /dev/hack green-on-black design language and probably run well on older hardware:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/1978

while other options are available to those looking for a modern, 2025-esque UI, including animations and collapsible categories:
https://demo.leenoz.com/zeina/

i like the idea of nntp for similar reasons -- people can choose their own clients -- although it would have a much higher barrier to entry.

i personally don't like discourse, because it's very javascript heavy and doesn't really separate into multiple forums like phpBB does -- the same issues would apply to many present-day forum tools, though i would be curious to hear about any that don't fit this mold.

we could set up demos of a few different platforms so people could try them and get a sense of which ones they like?

I don't think any of the following are really no-goes for software, but here's at least a short list of potential features/futures to asses when choosing software (And my question is, does phpbb have plugins for these):

  • oidc / saml
  • nntp bridge
  • email bridge
  • hackability / plugins system/ecosystems in general

anyway , on the topic of forums

(if someone fixes IDP i'll put this all on the ticket!)

the nice thing about phpBB is the wide range of styles, and the ability to pick your own

and style also has some of a say in compatibility

so i'm guessing that https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/1978/ would work on cursedsilicon's old IE setup

and then diamond can set its style to zaina

hi! we are not quite forum yet. we need to set up mTLS between the auth proxy and the forum webserver (and until then, the forum is under the .dev TLD).
