Well this started as a Linkedin post but it hit a huge amount of impressions, so I think people found it useful.
Let’s start…
1. You’ve taken courses, built a portfolio, maybe even gotten a certification.
2. You’ve applied to dozens (or hundreds) of jobs labeled “Entry-Level.”
3. And yet… every role asks for 2-3 years of experience.
What happened to actual entry level jobs?

❌ The Harsh Reality:
Companies don’t want to train junior data professionals anymore. It’s that simple. And it hurts.
Instead, they:
✅ Automate tasks that juniors used to do
✅ Hire experienced analysts who can deliver value immediately.
✅ Expect candidates to already have real world experience.
💡 What Can You Do?
If the jobs aren’t coming to you, you need to make yourself hireable in a different way.
✅ Stop Applying —> Start Building
• Create projects that solve real business problems, not just Kaggle datasets.
• Document your work: Write case studies, post dashboards, explain your thought process.
• Show that you can drive impact, not just write SQL or Python.
✅ Leverage Alternative Pathways
• Freelance on Upwork or Fiverr to gain hands on experience.
• Contribute to open-source projects, nonprofits, or startups.
• Join hackathons, competitions, or online communities to collaborate on real work.
✅ Network Like Your Career Depends on It (Because It Does)
• Connect with hiring managers and industry professionals.
• Engage with LinkedIn posts, comment with insights, and be visible.
• Ask for informational interviews people hire who they know.
• Find a mentor.
🔥 The Truth:
Companies aren’t eliminating entry level roles. They’re just raising the bar for what “entry level” means. Every data person who I have discussions with, validates it.
If you’re waiting for a company to take a chance on you, you might be waiting forever. Make them notice you instead.
What’s your biggest struggle in breaking into data?
