I. THE TRUTH

In our story, everything is true. Nothing is made up, no fairy tale waiting for a happy ending. I wanted to live this love, and you know it. You recognized it from the very first moment. And it hurts because it was not a dream, but a destiny that had to happen. You were there with me, holding my hand. II. THE SUSPENSION There were words we kept chasing, shaping our dreams, while stardust fell over us. There were moments of silence when your eyes got lost in mine, and the breath of emotion remained unspoken. There were looks that said more than the words still held inside. There, we liked the waiting. It lasted longer than usual. There was something holding us up. Love had opened its eyes on us, without looking through the mind, even knowing it could never become a life together. I saw where it hurt. We knew we were living an impossible love and we accepted the pain it caused us, like a boulder we had to take into account. And yet we managed to put it aside, at least for a moment, closing our eyes.

And the imagined world of what already existed belonged only to us. III. THE FRACTURE The distance was outside us, between what we felt and what was waiting for us in reality. Not everything was in harmony. Not between the two of us. It was the world around us that was different, and inside a smile you hid it within the illusion. I felt alone. Somehow, even abandoned. I stopped saying anything, but my inner world seemed like nothing more than appearance or fantasy. And that was when something inside me began to give way. IV. THE RECOGNITION That resonance had started with me, while reading something you had written. It was already inside me. You had only recognized it as a part of you being made whole. Like a puzzle that cannot take shape if it cannot find where its pieces fit. The two of us were the perfect fit in a bond we could not avoid. V. THE CONCRETE PAIN And that was exactly what hurt me. No longer feeling my hand caressing yours. It might have seemed like an ordinary gesture, but to me it meant everything. Because what I felt with you brought me back to myself every time. VI. CHOOSING MYSELF But one thing I understood. My peace cannot depend on whether a man loves me. Not even if that man is you. And saying this does not mean I feel less. It means I have reached a point where I need to love myself. Without asking for anything, without demanding attention. Without waiting to be chosen. I still feel this love. I am the first to want to live it. But I also know it is not possible. It cannot happen. And maybe this is exactly where I have to remain true to what I feel for you, without losing myself.

VII. WHAT REMAINS To keep loving each other without touching is still love to me. The soul speaks, feels, flies where no one can see or hear. Maybe someone will come someday. But the point, now, is to love myself for who I am, not because of someone else. To be the one who chooses me. Tears are running down my face. I’m sending you a kiss, my love. I love you. Author’s Note This poem comes from something real. From a love that was never invented, never imagined for the sake of poetry, and never shaped to become a story with a different ending. Some feelings enter our lives quietly and remain there, even when they cannot become the life we once hoped to share. They leave traces. In words. In silences. In gestures that may seem ordinary to everyone else, but carry an entire world for the people who lived them. This poem is also about what happens when love becomes so strong that it forces us to look at ourselves differently. Sometimes loving someone means accepting that not everything can be lived the way we would want. Sometimes it means staying faithful to what we feel without losing who we are. And perhaps that is one of the hardest things love can ask of us: to let it remain, without letting ourselves disappear inside it. — Antonio Castellaneta
