Last month, I celebrated my birthday in Cape Town, South Africa, surrounded by family and friends. It was nothing short of breathtaking. Initially, we had always imagined relocating somewhere like this in our later years—gray-haired, retired, and settled. But now? The timeline has shifted. We’re thinking a year or two, not decades.

For 20 years, we swore we’d never leave California. It was home, familiar, and comfortable. But as we’ve traveled—to Jamaica, Mexico, Thailand, South Africa, and beyond—our perspective has expanded. The blinders have been lifted, and we see the world differently now
