First in a six-book series. It is an ongoing project. I write short stories in all six books, (1) to help me develop the great arc of the story, (2) keep adjusting loose ends to fit accurately within the story, (3) that each book has a conclusion that extends the story until the final book.

The first book sets up the world the protagonist will inhabit, and its conflict with the world he came from. It’s nearly complete (about 80% with a strong ending-continuation).

Noah Alvin Ryder, who, seven years earlier, at the age of eight, met a mysterious uncle, unheard of until that day (the same day his father died in a hot-air balloon accident), now reappears to take him on a trip into the heart of a mysterious, old growth forest in the uninhabited hills and backwoods of the Carolinas in search of clues to his father's death.

This uncle had given him a ring the day they first met, a millennia old heirloom, which was now firmly fixed to his thumb, and from the moment he put on the ring, unbeknownst to him, a great dimensional rift in spacetime tore into his world from Quinque Montis Vallis (the Valley of Five Mountains), and the mystical nature that flowed from it brought forgetfulness (a dementia) and sterility to the humans living nearby.

He learns he must find a way to heal this rift or humanity will go mad, then become extinct. The five dragons, one on each mountain top and each representing a precious stone (emerald, ruby, sapphire, diamond, except the last, Trajan Divi the Golden), are the key to the cure and each present Noah a riddle he must solve before he can stop the rift from expanding.
