Not everyone collaborates in the same way. Just as we each have unique DNA that shapes our physical characteristics, we also have distinct collaboration DNA that influences how we contribute to collective efforts. Our Collaboration Archetype if you will.
Understanding your primary Collaboration DNA type helps you find your most authentic and valuable role in collaborative efforts. When we each contribute from our strengths while appreciating those of others, the collective result far exceeds what any of us could achieve alone.
Through my research and work with successful collaborations, I've identified four distinct collaboration archetypes. Each brings unique strengths to the collaborative process.
Pathfinders hold open the problem space. They excel at synthesizing multiple angles and perspectives, always focused on why and finding ways to resolve issues. They possess strong strategic and relational skills.
Pathfinders:
See the whole system and its interconnections.
Navigate complexity and ambiguity.
Keep the team focused on purpose.
Balance multiple perspectives.
Recognize patterns others might miss.
When things get chaotic or confused, Pathfinders can help the team step back, regain perspective, and chart a way forward that addresses the core issues.
Pioneers push the boundaries, always on the lookout for what's possible. Naturally optimistic and innovative, they routinely ask what if? and are not easily deterred by obstacles. Pioneers have strong strategic and applied thinking skills.
Pioneers:
Challenge conventional thinking.
Envision possibilities others can't see.
Take appropriate risks.
Inspire with energy and optimism.
Break through barriers with creative solutions.
When a team is stuck or settling for incremental improvements, Pioneers can spark breakthrough thinking and open new pathways forward.
Bridges foster connections, encourage wide-ranging perspectives, and build common ground. They are on the lookout for those who have strong relational and tactical skills.
Bridges:
Connect people across boundaries.
Translate between different perspectives.
Build trust and psychological safety.
Surface unspoken concerns.
Find common ground in diverse viewpoints.
When team members are talking past each other or working in silos, Bridges can create understanding and cohesion that enables true collaboration.
Galvanisers like to get things done. They ask how, build traction and maintain momentum. Galvanisers are strong on the tangible and making progress.
Galvanisers:
Turn ideas into action.
Organize resources and efforts.
Create momentum and energy.
Overcome practical obstacles.
Deliver tangible results.
When a team is spinning its wheels in discussion or analysis, Galvanisers can focus energy and move the collaboration from talk to action.
The most successful collaborations I've studied have a healthy mix of all four types. Each brings essential qualities that, when combined, create a powerful collaborative force:
Pathfinders ensure we're addressing the right problem, considering the full system context, and find ways to resolve issues.
Pioneers help us break out of conventional thinking, explore new possibilities and break new ground.
Bridges connect people and ideas, weave together different points of view and hold the mirror up to build shared understanding.
Galvanisers translate ideas into tangible action and drive for results.
Without all four types, collaborations tend to falter in predictable ways:
Without Pathfinders, we may solve the wrong problem or miss critical connections
Without Pioneers, we stay within comfortable boundaries and miss breakthrough opportunities
Without Bridges, we fail to build the trust and shared understanding needed for true collaboration
Without Galvanisers, our great ideas remain just that - ideas, not action
This recognition of different but equally valuable contributions is beautifully captured in the Māori proverb:
E koekoe te tūī, e ketekete te kākā, e kūkū te kererū
"The tui squawks, the kaka chatters, the kereru coos."
In other words, it takes all kinds of people, each with their unique contributions, to create something wonderful together.
Understanding your natural collaboration style - and appreciating how it complements others - is invaluable when working in collaboration. Harnessing our own strengths is essential to harnessing our collective ones.
