We’ve all been on this date…

After nearly a decade as a matchmaker, I’ve asked myself the same question hundreds of times:

Why does it feel so hard for two people who both want marriage, children, and commitment to actually find each other?

People love to blame dating apps. They blame “dating fatigue.” They blame the ratio of men to women in their city. They blame social media.

While all of those things play a role, I think the biggest problem is much simpler.

Men and women are often communicating in completely different languages.

And until we understand how the other person experiences dating, we’ll continue missing each other.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from women is that men make dating decisions from a rigid checklist.

In my experience, most don’t.

Could there be a few non-negotiables? Of course. Maybe he wants someone who shares his religion. Maybe he knows he wants children, or knows he doesn’t. Those bigger life values matter.

But when it comes to deciding whether he wants to see you again...

He’s usually asking himself a much simpler question:

“How did I feel around her?”

Did he feel relaxed?

Did the conversation flow naturally?

Did he laugh?

Did he feel like he was getting to know a genuinely kind person?

Or did he feel like he was sitting in a job interview?

I’ve watched countless women lose a great man’s interest because they spent an entire first date trying to determine whether he checked every box instead of simply seeing whether they enjoyed being together.

Research consistently shows that first impressions are heavily influenced by warmth, responsiveness, and the feeling someone creates during an interaction, not just what they say. Compatibility often predicts future romantic interest more than objective “mate value” alone.

That’s because attraction isn’t just intellectual.

It’s emotional.
