The Depth Of Meeting

Prompted by the medical crisis I was in last week, and what these medical crises require of me in our meeting, I’ve been sitting with the depth of what meetings involve. What is contained within a meeting. What is made possible through meeting. What meeting asks of the participants.

Whether the meeting is us human creatures meeting ourselves or meeting other human creatures, the smallest to largest matter and lifeforms, the more-than-human, the mysteries, this Earth, the unimaginable vastness of the universe; or the meeting is far beyond our sight: a grain of sand meeting the ocean, a herd of deer meeting the invitation of a new glade, new mulch meeting ancient rock, fungal spores meeting an old tree truck, a cloud meeting the warmth of the sun, deep time meeting new life forms: it could be said that to exist is to be within an ongoing unfurling of meetings.

That existence only exists because of an ongoing unfurling of meetings.

As a human creature, fated to a lifetime of meetings, often meeting what we might not choose to meet (much of which very few of us escape meeting), what might we make kin with when we become deeply curious about meeting Human and non-human meetings. Beautiful and terrible meetings. Definable and wordless meetings. Making kin with a non-human-centred universe.

In old English, to ‘meet’ is to encounter, to find, or to come into the same place. It is derived from the same root as ‘moot’, which means assembly, meeting, or council. What, then, assembles in meeting? What is encountered, what is found, when two or more elements/things/lifeforms meet? What council is made forth from that meeting?
