Stories From The field: Earthself CIC

For those of you who arrived here due to the ecological organisations design lens (or arrived for other reasons but are members of an organisation and curious about organisations as ecological), it is a pleasure to share that the online guidebook now houses the first story from the field.

Stories from the field are case studies generously submitted by those working with the design lens, sharing some of their process and insights so that their experiences can be of service to others.

From Earthself CIC’s story from the field:

How did you work with the design lens?

I explored working with the design lens by overlaying a compass on top of it so that the top of the lens pointed north and the bottom of the lens pointed south, etc. I then found a tree close to my house that attracted me to work with it as the anchor point of the design lens, i.e. the central point of the design lens.

With the compass overlay I was able to orient in the landscape to the hills in the north and the river in the south so that I was embodied in place. I would then spend time walking around the tree to find where I wanted to stand in relation to it.

Upon returning home, I would then look at the design lens and see what part of the design lens this orientation referred to and would then select a question from that section to hold as inquiry in terms of developing Earthself as an organisation.

I continue to do this as and when I’m inspired and have worked through the development of a number of key areas in Earthself through using this process. My intention is to arrive to an answer to the question that can then be embedded in organisational process.

Ecological Organisations: A Design Lens is one pathway into recognising and being-in-relationship-with organisations as complex, relational living systems (ecologies), in entangled co-creation with place, neighbourhoods, social systems, ecosystems, histories, cultural stories, possible futures, the more-than-human, this planet, and more.

It is shared as creative commons, freely offered to any organisational founders, leaders, or stewards to work with for non-commercial purposes.

This work is as much an attunement to us human creatures as ecological as it is of organisations as ecological. It is therefore intended to be an embodied exploration, not just an intellectual one.

Meeting Kin is an hour and a half meeting yourself, other human creatures, the more-than-human, and this Earth through ecological enquiry, maybe finding that your meetings become more visceral, full, and wondrous.

Sitting at the intersection of ecology, story, and embodied practise, ecological enquiry is one pathway into the relational nature of existence, knowledge, complexity, and the cosmologies and stories that we world through (and are being worlded by).
