Now onto this weeks post…

I don’t really believe in dressing to hide your body.

I also don’t believe that because you have a particular body shape, there is a list of clothes you are allowed to wear and another list that is strictly off limits.

But I do believe in understanding proportion.

After 35 years of looking at clothes, styling and trying on an awful lot of blazers, I have learnt that when something doesn’t feel quite right, it is often not because the garment is wrong for your body. It is because the proportions are wrong for you.

I have a whole segment about proportions in my book, The Forever Wardrobe.

And nowhere is this more obvious than with a blazer.

A blazer can make an outfit look instantly polished. It can pull together jeans and a T-shirt, make a dress feel more modern and transform the simplest outfit into something that looks considered.

But it can also be one of the most difficult things to get right.

Too oversized and you can feel swamped. Too fitted and it can feel dated. Too short and it can cut you in the wrong place. Too long and it can feel as though you are wearing someone else’s jacket.

So, how do you find the right one?

I don’t think you need to know whether you are an hourglass, a pear, an apple or any other shape before you can find clothes that work for you.

I would start with three much simpler questions:

Where do I like my clothes to skim?

Where do I like to create shape?

How much volume do I actually feel comfortable wearing?

Because the same blazer can look completely different on two women of the same height and size.

The fit, fabric, length and styling all make a difference.
