Episode 11 of Life, Documented gives you a 2 minute exercise to process your life in moments that can be documented.

Today’s article is for you if you ever thought, “I don’t have time to photograph my life today” — or maybe even “I don’t know what to photograph”.
Well, what if I told you that all you need is 2 minutes? That’s it. Two minutes to notice, to capture, to create a tiny little record of your life. No gear, no perfect light, no planning. Just you and what’s around you.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1 — Pause
Stop what you’re doing. Even if it’s in the middle of making breakfast, walking the dog, or waiting for the kettle to boil. Two minutes of your attention is all it takes.
Step 2 — Look around
Notice the small details you normally miss. A pattern on your mug. The way sunlight hits your kitchen counter. A shadow creeping across the floor. Or maybe just the chaos of socks on the sofa — because you know… that’s real life too.
Step 3 — Pick one thing
Choose one tiny thing to focus on. It could be:
A colour that pops
A texture you love
A shadow, a reflection, a corner of your home
Or even a smile — your own or someone else’s
Step 4 — Capture it
Take your phone or camera and grab a quick shot. Don’t overthink it. Don’t try to make it perfect. The point is to notice it, to see it, and to record it.
Step 5 — Celebrate it
Take a moment to look at what you captured. Maybe it’s nothing special… or maybe it’s a little gem. Either way, you just spent 2 minutes connecting with your life. That’s a win.
You can do this anywhere, any time. Stuck in line at the supermarket? Two minutes. Waiting for your tea to brew? Two minutes. On your lunch break? Two minutes.
The magic here is that tiny moments add up. Two minutes a day might feel small, but over weeks and months, you’ll start to notice patterns, little joys, and everyday beauty you’d otherwise miss.
I’ve taken countless photos in moments like these. The images aren’t award-winning or spectacular - and that’s exactly where their magic lies. Because documenting your life isn’t about impressing anyone else, it’s just about creating a visual diary for you, to remind you of the beauty - and the mess - of your life.
So today, I challenge you: take 2 minutes, notice something, capture it, and just enjoy the moment. That’s it. That’s all you need.
See you next time, when we’ll talk about why the “bad” photos are actually the best ones.
