Good morning from beautiful Aspen, Colorado! I am here at the invitation of the terrific staff at the Aspen Global Change Institute, who have convened a group of researchers to think about climate change and compounding, cascading, and cumulative risks. As part of the workshop, I am honored to be giving the Walter Orr Roberts Memorial Lecture. I will be speaking on a topic that is near and dear to my heart: the importance of land-use planning for reducing risk.
I’ll talk about why land use is important, good news and bad news about the current state of land use planning for resilience, eight science-backed explanations for why we don’t use land use planning more forcefully to manage risk, and highlight some organizations and efforts that are changing that story.
