Shocking secret communications between ACT and New Zealand First have revealed the real reason behind both parties’ opposition to National’s under-16 social media ban.
The communications, slipped to The Satiriser on the condition that “you didn’t hear this from me”, outline fears that prominent MPs from both parties could inadvertently be banned from social media because they consistently act like 13-year-olds.
“Social media algorithms are both sophisticated and imperfect”, the secret cross-party briefing paper outlines.
“If, say, Facebook is required to identify and ban users who present as under the age of 16, then certain MPs may be erroneously characterised by its algorithm as immature juveniles who need to have a good clip round the ear and to be sent to bed with no dinner. And, crucially, no social media.”
“Candidly, look at the examples of Shane Jones and David Seymour.”
